That was an awesome race. It was not boring because Mansell could not get passed, instead it was exciting watching to see if he could. Brilliant drive by Senna AND Mansell.

Potential competition is what makes F1 interesting not contrived passes, ie. DRS or pitstop induced.

Okay back to sleep for me.

Ian, I believe we are on the same page and you prove my point; F1 is great to watch because of their amazing speed, not because of the quality of the racing. Formula Ford is better racing and far more exciting to watch race quality wise.

So I return again to F1 being best to watch during qualifying, the races are boring in comparison.

I totally concur with this opinion. Brilliant drive by both world champions.
Monaco is still very special with an amazing history and F1 needs diversity not just Herman Tilke designed circuits however great they are.
Sure the races can become processional at time but the level of skill hasn't changed.
I am not a fan of tyre controlled drama or DRS, it isn't real racing no more than push to pass.
Kers is a valid development towards street cars..
I believe driver controlled front and rear wings would be exciting.
Looking at the history of F1 tyres, back in the turbo crazy, qually engines eighties Goodyear seemed to make tyres to handle huge horsepower with far less sophisticated chassis and aero.
I suggest no tyre change rule, Pirelli seems to have too much control over the sport re: the Mercedes testing snafu.
I personally welcome the end of the Ecclestone era and would welcome a return to the actual racing of old without regressing in technology.

Another brilliant race where passing did not occur for 60 laps!
Conclusion passing does not necessarily make a race interesting.

Monaco is a poor joke. If F1 didn't ran there, suggesting today to have F1 cars race through downtown Monte Carlo, would grant you a oneway ticket mean to the asylum. I am always happy when Monaco is done and we can move on to a real track. Even the Hungaroring is more interesting.

+1. When a car can be 2-3 sec a lap slower and not allow passing then the fastest car did not win. Thats a point of racing lost in the gala and nostalgia that is Monaco. Thats all it is. Its a pageant. Nice but hardly a 'race'.

Seeing a "racing driver" stuck behind a mule is hardly interesting either!!

I also agree that Pirelli has too much influence over F1 and there needs to be a standard set for tyres, not mickey mouse compounds

I have a signed photo of Mansell sitting on the ground with the bottle of champagne as he appears in that article. Didn't know it was from that race. Thanks for posting.

But that concept did recently happen with the birth of the Singapore street race.

I don't understand the current trend for street races, even though I'm a big Monaco fan.

Yes but you need to appreciate the skill required by that "mule" in keeping the drivers behind them. You have to get your line dead perfect all the time. I reckon that 1981 Spanish Grand Prix would have been very exciting to watch.

This is why I find motorcycle racing extremely boring to watch as the passing is too EASY. Yes the riding is amazing but a race lacks craft because passing appears to be a piece of cake. With car racing you need to engineer a pass and that makes it far more interesting to watch IMO.
This is Bernie's fault not Pirelli, they are just doing what he believes is best for his TV show.
