Did they really use the old rock ballad "Ground Control to Major Tom" to advertise the new sedan?

If I am not mistaken, did not "Major Tom" burn up on re-entry in that song?

Sort of like when Microsoft picked "Start Me Up" to advertise win95, and conveniently left out "makes a grown man cry"???

Cadillac used Led Zeppelin for their cars, Lincoln is lagging a bit! :)

Seriously, their ad campaign depicts it's some futuristic rocket so it's apropos.

I thought after he left the capsule and told his wife he loved her very much, Ground Control noticed his circuit was dead and something was wrong. Major Tom was left floating in his tin can far above the moon. After all, planet Earth was blue and there was nothing he could do. That would indicate he suffered a power failure, and was left in the vast silence of space to freeze/suffocate/become radiated. Alternately, if there was a short-circuit in an oxygen rich environment, as there was in capsules during the pre-Apollo days, he could have had a fire and been incinerated. This, however, is not very plausible as he was noticing the color of the Earth after the circuit was dead, and still could do nothing to save himself. Conclusion: power failure.

Perhaps burning up upon reentry was in his future if he was in an Earth orbit, and depending upon his orbit, but there is also the chance for him to crash into the moon due to the moon's gravitational field (if he were in an Earth-moon transition (since he was 'above' it)). He could also be slung off into space into a heliocentric orbit once he passed the Moon.

Any way you slice it, there was nothing he could do.

Thanks for the retro-rock(et) history, Oceanic.

I still kind of wonder if this sort of an unpowered end would make you want to put Lincoln on your list, though...

What's next - Jaguar uses Jan & Dean's "Dead Man's Curve" to advertise the XKR?

I like the Technologic song by Daft Punk, but doesn't make me want to go buy a Lincoln.

    DON'T give them ideas!!! :(

Considering the songs story their choice was kinda strange. They should have chosen something else like:

sky rockets in flight, afternoon delight!! (Starland Vocal Band) Spacy & racy!! :D
