Driving today on the hiway and all of a sudden my speedo is dead. I rolled the odo to see if that may catch of help the situation but nothing. A handful of miles later it's back and functioning the remainder of the drive.

I know the speedo is mechanical (vs electrically rooted as the tach) so is there a connection on the gauge or drive unit side that typically loosens up on these cars that I should check?

    Thx

I had the same problem. My speedo would work about 90% of the time, then at the end it stopped working. You need to replace your speedo sending unit. I think the part is about $125.00 US

I'm not sure what year your car is, but I had my sending unit go bad. I ordered the part based on the year of my car (1982). The sender that arrived in the mail was an electronic one, the one on my car is mechanical. So I had to order an older part number, despite what any reference I could find indicated.

I guess I must be missing something here in these posts. I believe all 308's have electronic speedometers and the odometer is geared in the head but electronicly controled. The speedometer sending unit is located on the left side of the crankshaft (waterpump side) in the transmission. It is gear driven and sends an electrical signal to the speedo head. Is this the same as you are describing?

Common symptom on the F models using the 116987 speed sensor (which does not include 308s) when it gets intermittent -- try searching on that part number, "116987", for prior threads -- should have some photos/diagrams of the 328 location.

But your 328 speedometer system is "electrical" -- the only thing "mechanical" in your 328 speedometer system is the rotating multi-pole magnetic wheel inside the gearbox that the 116987 sensor detects.

Shows you what the hell I know about F cars eh?! I have to stop extrapolating my Ducati tech to Ferrari. Thanks for the correction!

I wish my speedo would stop working once in awhile........ I put it in the garage and when I come back a few days later, it has several hundred miles on it more than when I last parked it........ :(

Mine did today while out on a drive.........brought it back into the garage, put up in the hoist, checked the connection at the tranny, looked ok...went for another ride, still no speedo...........but the odometer still worked........Then, I thought, what about the reset switch on the passenger side under the hood ?.the wires for the odometer and the speedo are connected here...........pulled off the dust cap, inserted a small screw driver , I felt the switch reset.......Presto.........Speedo back in action......you may want to try the same thing.......I understand this is to let you know your car needs a service............if you want a pic of what this looks like......let me know.............

welcome to why NO ONE - EVER- should trust the indicated milage on one of these cars. The sending unit will break 100% of the time. Everyone's either has already or is about to, period (if they are not just unpluged).

I have been on this soapbox for years...

No problem, though. It's an easy fix.

Anyone happen to know where the 'box' pictured in Ang's reply is located on the Euro? I just looked on both sides of mine and don't see anything anywhere.

It looks to me as if that box is up at the front, somewhere near one of the AC components. You'll have to remove the trim to get to this as far as I recall. I don't recall seeing this on my 1977, so it might be that earlier 308s don't have this switch. Don't know what year ibanez has, or you for that matter.

The older ones can have a failure of the sender, a failure at the head, or a chaffed wire shorted in the loom....check all three.

Often the speedo operation will get pretty wonky prior to total failure. It is electronic.

Had the same problem. 1978 308 carb. The speedo and odo would not work when cold. After the first mile or two, she popped up and worked great for the rest of the drive. I replaced the sender, and the problem went away. This happened last summer. Ditto on what Tommy says - he's right.

I did the same a couple of weeks ago on my GT4. It seems the location on Guido's Mondial is slightly different, but the idea is the same.

In my case, removing the passenger side wheel and wheel well made access so much easier.... A 20 minute job, including wheel and well removal and cleaning up after I was done.

Thanks fellas. I think this is my problem but it'd sure suck to spend $220 on the part to find it's not the issue!

    +1.

I wonder what the values of these cars would be if we all knew the genuine mileages. ;)

I've got the car up on a ramp now to clean the sending connection and scowl it into submission; but I can't find the damn thing! Where is it?!

If I remember it's the left rear of the car near the half shaft driving the right rear wheel. Mine drops out sometimes and I bought a new sending unit. By the time the sending unit arrived it started working again. Found if I tap on the speedo it starts working again so I never changed the sending unit. I have one new in the box I can sell if you want. I figured I might need it someday so I held on to it but would be happy to sell it if you need one.

Thanks guys, I actually got under there and found it since posting. Cleaned the connection up (though it was already pretty clean) and PRESTO! Nothing!

Looks like there's a new sending unit in my immediate future...
