I can't think of any. If Michael wins the Championship this season will he be the first Champion to retire while still holding the crown? I know Rindt became Champion after he had died, but that was hardly his choice!

    Doh!

If MS can be remembered as fondly as Prost and Lauda he should be pretty happy.

Fangio after his fifth title in '57. He did drive a couple of races in '58, but most people think of him as retiring after '57.

    Also, Stewart in '73.

Mansell didn't really retire, he didn't want Prost as a teammate so he went to champcars then came back to F1, lol

Mansell did leave F1 after winning the title in '92. He then went on to win the CART Indycar title in '93. In '94 he drove a few races for Williams - the French GP and the last three races of the season. He won the season-ending Australian GP. With hindsight, I'd say that's when he should have retired. However, he returned in '95 to drive for McLaren. He was too big to fit in the car and missed the start of the season. Then after two uncompetitve races he retired from F1 and was replaced by Mark Blundell.

Lauda didn't retire the year he was champion, but rather the following
year (1985) when he won only one race. I believe he retired from the
Australian G.P. with brake problems and that was it.

    Mark

P.S.: How about Fangio in 57', and Brabham almost made it in 70' with better luck.
