So my CV boots were torn and needed to be replaced. Once the shop had it apart there was no grease inside so now the axles need to be replaced. Are the OEM axles the best ones to go with?

Man id say if they were shot you would have heard noises coming from them.

Take a look at the parts and get photos of them.

But the shaft would be fine younwould need new cv joints.

He showed me where there was a groove dug into the cv joint. Could that have damaged the axle where it needs to be replaced? It's a very reputable shop and I'm dealing directly with the owner who has Ferraris himself.

I'd have to see it to believe it. A slight groove or wear area in the race is not in my opinion reason to replace. Your piston rings are no longer perfect and wear free, does that mean they are incapable of doing their job for a very long time? Your tires are not brand new, time to replace? I am the owner and have Ferraris myself, doesn't make me honest or infallible.

So you guys think I should ask him why we can't just replace the CV joints?

This is a situation where the shop can loose and if they have been in business for any length of time they have learned how minimize loss. If they just pack the CV joint and send you on your way would your next post be, "Noise in right rear what is it?" Then when the keyboard warriors defile the choice of saving you money to repack the CV the shop will be branded rip-off artists. OTOH if they replace the axle they get questioned for over treatment? You see if this is a shop they should err on the side of doing the best they can because so much of the cost is labor. That can mean new parts. If you are a DIY guy and labor is free there is no reason to not just pack the CV with new grease and see what happens. Can you see the difference? This isn't surgery and your mechanic is not going to have you fill out an "informed consent form" to do auto repair. If they are reputable you take their recommendation.

You do not need new axles at best you need new inner CV joints.

    Porsche part#

    http://www.autohausaz.com/search/product.aspx?partnumber=93033203400&gclid=CLqOkM7q2NACFZy1wAodYfoJIw

Then look at this for cross reference on parts that was done years ago.

    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/technical-q/176293-lobro-parts-source.html

I see zero reason to replace the entire axle assembly, you should only needs new inner CV joints if it is that bad not doubting the shops ability to see a bad cv joint, they just dont know how to shop for ferrari parts because they never do.

Nothing happened to the axle shaft, nothing is wrong with the outer cv joint and boots its just the inners.

Problem is ferrari doesn't just sell the replacment CV joint they only give you the entire axle assembly and **** that ****!

Shouldnt be any more than $400 in parts to fix this problem.

Also this car is not being worked on by someone with much if any Ferrari experience( I know that for a fact) as we have no one near us in this part of michigan for Ferrari work, you get Porsche guys they are as close as you get and we know the game Ferrari plays with parts.

No reason to throw money out the window.

But get your old parts back regardles, michigan law states you can get your original parts back.

I do not think thisnis a case of bull **** work its just they have no clue about the Ferrari parts game.

Phrogs it's Prestige Imports in Grand Rapids. They do work on Ferrari's although I don't know how many they do each year. I will discuss some of this with the owner and see if we can work something out.

If you want the Porsche boots and aero boots, let me know. I have a full set I opted not to use. We can work up a price as they'll just sit here otherwise. PM me.

Obviously only if they are salvageable to someone here. You guys seem to think they are ok and you can get after market CV joints to work with them.

I just decided to go with new, but maybe I can get some money back if the old ones are useable.

So no not unloading them on some schmuck, but thanks for asking!
