Oh give me an f'ing break. 50 degrees. I'm GLAD when I can warm the garage up to 50* during the winter. Changing the plugs and extenders should take all of maybe an hour to do (including one or two beer breaks). Then you get to take the car out and vroooom vrooom it on some nice country road. As for the 02 sensor, why bother? Those systems don't work on our old cars anyway. LOL

Just get off your duff and go do it!! Have fun!

LOL!!! If that little work had the ability to parslize me, I'd be in serious trouble!!!

In the time it takes for this thread to get 5 responses, you could have completed the work and returned from that country drive!

"I keep hearing in my mind "it runs great, don't mess with it"
I always listen to this more than anything. Spare plug extenders, plugs and an O2 sensor are always good to have around. Unless You are chasing an ignition problem DO NOT F@@K WITH IT.

..all good till after you do actually renew extenders/plugs/wires/rotor arms/caps/filters or injectors (delete as appropriate!) and then it runs even better :)

More often than not you get a gradual degradation in performance that you don't really notice till after you "fettle" a few things.

After original post I immediately uncovered the car then put my slippers back on, poured a cup of coffee and topped it off with Baileys. Mmmm. Turned on the tube, chatted with the neighbors when they came by to invite me to NOLA for the day. I have just changed into my work clothes and am here to see if anyone has responded to my question about the speed sensor. I should be outside in a few minutes.

Have fun!! And especially enjoy driving it like you stole it once you are done!

That's why I'm here today, I use the public shame as motivation. I have the inner panel out and pulled the first spark plug to find that it's a different socket for the champion coming out vs the NGK going in. Have to make a trip to the auto parts store to get a magnetic socket. So I'm taking in a quick lunch of red beans and getting my pea soup started on the stove, then to the auto parts store.

PRO TIP: Get a mechanic's jumpsuit and you can change into / out of your work clothes in SECONDS.

C'mon, folks, we can whittle Dirk's job down to a few MINUTES if we give him enough advice. GO!

I am stuck inside because the road crews have spread salt for a storm that did not arrive (YET).
No problems, drive it while you can, then do the maintenance while you are waiting for the roads to clear.

But if you don't have a heated garage, do the job now, but double the time ( if not triple ).
Be sure to blow out the plug holes b4 you remove the plugs. I know you have seals, but the old extenders may leave something behind - better 30 minutes now then 30 hours later (pulling the heads).

Good luck and have a Merry Christmas

    Stephen

As easy as changing the oil. Imagine keeping the motivation going for 3 months to dismantle and replace your suspension, brake system, and steering rack. That takes a little motivation to do that night after night, weekend after weekend. My motivation was knowing how well she'd drive when done! Spark plugs?....eyes closed easy!

    Bailey's? Beer?

I've often wondered how many "do-overs" (or worse) are caused by mixing alcohol with mechanic work. :)

If you saw your hi-priced Ferrari shop guy drinking a bottle of Fat Tire while he was working on your 3x8, what would you say? ;)

Note, I am a serious drinker but I usually only do it while driving or other times where it can have no adverse affect.

    :)

All right, you can hit the stop watch, I'm done, well, kinda.
Plugs and extenders done. O2 sensor, appears need to drop exhaust, I got in there but no room above it. I'll leave that for later.
Coveralls, tried them, I have a freakishly long torso and find that the onces I've tried in the past hug the twig and giggleberries too tight.
No snow here, well, maybe once every 5 to 10 years.
Long term projects, it was hard but I did the major, incl cam seals, valve shims plus cooling and fuel lines over 19 days of working on it every day last spring. I think that is why I'd rather drive than work on it.
Alcohol. I'm thinking I'm an alcoholic. When I have no motivation I find one beer gets me up and going. Two or three and I break something. Nothing broken today but I have learned the Ferrari rule of patience, patience and more patience and if any frustration creeps in quit for the day before touching another wrench.

I have taken it for a drive already, put about 40 miles on it after completing the plugs and extenders. And bummer, found a bit of oil moisture on the forward distributor cap boot. Another project for another day.

I also completed a pot of pea soup while doing all the above. Eating some now, mmm mmm good.

Thanks for the comments and support all.

If your mechanic is drinking Fat Tire, they have lousy taste in beer. Move on to more discerning tastes. That brewer now makes an OK IPA, but there is much better. Think Maritime Pacific or Long Trail.

Darn, that post 17 was supposed to be fun and glib, but it's just pointless and rude now that I look at it. Sorry. Do let us know how the O2 sensor comes out--I almost did that a while ago but didn't look closely enough at it to realize it was a difficult task. Remove the exhaust system? Ugh!

I don't know if it runs better. It was running great before. It was nice to see the plugs all looked good and consistant. I've been wrenching on cars long enough to become jaded over a small change making a big difference. It did seem to start quicker and was smoother on immediate startup. When I say quicker, about 1/2 crank of engine instead of a full revolution.

I have a lousy ear, for music and basically everything. My brother would know immediately if it was running better. I literally can't hear the difference between a flat and sharp. My brother did that for me years ago... He'd hit one note then the other and say hear the difference. I had to say no every time, he couldn't believe it. I guess I got what my dad calls the old tin ear.

I have been trying for several years now to train my wife to perform simple service operations on my three Ferraris. I downloaded the terrible service manual and those excellent FerrariChat threads BUT !! she is not fully cooperating. Then again she is a lawyer (Assistant District Attorney) and drives a Porsche - that should tell you why I am having difficulties. Winter is here and I will have to take my toys to my trusted Ferrari/Jag/Austin Healey mechanic to play with - spring is just ahead.

Thats funny. My wife wants nothing to do with my Ferrari but does want a Porsche. Although she is holding out for a Turbo because they are pretty.

This is why I insist on an oil change as a first date. You'll know right away if you've got the right gal in your sights. ;)
