Was it not a bit crazy to have the cable so short between the sculpture and the chopper? I do think there may have been a problem with the chopper to be honest. They all died.
I suppose the cable any longer would make the sculpture sway too much, remember these chinooks carry tanks etc... with short cables no problem
I fly helicopters and what I think that happened by watching this video is that the helicopter crashed due to "settling with power". Very strange for an experienced pilot for this to happened as we practice falling into them and then saving our asses many and many times every time we practice, the same with autorotations. S.W.P. also can take place if doing an approach to landing with a tail wind, one has to watch out for low forward speed... Helicopters take full concentration when doing manuevers. http://www.dynamicflight.com/aerodynamics/settling_power/
This is a more complete video.Seems like the Pilot kept on going down. http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2001/asiafeaturefile/3005/
My theory is "settling with power" and this is a very well educated theory. The pilot didn't keep going down. He went and got himself into a settling with power condition, in this condition and where his helicopter was at, there was nothing he could do to save himself nor the machine. The only way to get out of settling with power is first of all to NOT PULL UP on the collective, if you do then you will increase the rate of descend and go down at a faster rate than free fall. The first symptoms of settling with power are vibrations and then look at your altimeter and you'll see yourself losing altitude, to get out you must lower on the collective and push forward on the cyclic, if you can't gain forward speed to leave the vortices behind then give cyclic input towards your best path. The video shows him going down and the striking whatever, I think that he went into s.w.p. and he didn't noticed, if he did noticed he was to close to the obstacles that made him wreck. Even if he had noticed he was trapped with nowhere to go and with a heavy load that affects many other aspects of the flying situation that was at hand. Engine failure would be very strange as that helicopter is got three engines. Him going down and just crashing? No way, unless he passed out by some physical condition. Explaining helicopter flying is a little hard over the internet, there are a lot of physics involved.
I'd agree with the above on the power settling issue. Look at the force he drops the svulpture at too, a little too hard IMO.
