I'm in the market for a new head unit for my car, and came across some units that support HD Radio. I had not heard much about it at the time, but after doing some research, it appears that HD Radio might actually become a true supported radio technology. They are claiming that FM will sound CD-like quality and AM will now sound like FM quality. (I believe the bandwidth is 96kbps),

    Any experts?

I've been looking for someone to tell me why I shouldn't spring for an HD Radio compatible unit while I can get a slightly higher quality unit without HD radio for the same price.

I understand iBiquity Digital is the company that has developed this technology, and has licenced over 300 over-the-air channels. There are currently 30 in my area (Chicagoland), with 18 already live. Looks like it may give XM and Sirius another competitor in their marketplace. As of now, it is free and can stream data as well -- weather, traffic, song names/titles, etc..

I remember when HDTV technology was in its infancy and there was no 'set' standard on the technology. This would be my concern with HD Radio, but since the top 15 of 20 are private investors in Ibiquity(Clear Channel,ABC,Cox Radio, etc..), it seems like they will continue with this technology as the FCC has approved the implementation.

    Interesting stuff.

HD looks interesting but there is only one station near me that uses it. I listen to XM all the time. I don't think terrestrial radio, HD or not, will cause any problems for sat. radio simply because of all the adverts. I would not go back to FM commercial radio no matter how good the quality gets.

I am trying to pick a head unit as well. The ones I have looked at that are HD ready require an extra HD box for an extra cost. I can't see spending extra money for FM unless there are stations you just can't live without.
