I've been in the market for a HDTV, this is completely new to me so I was told with my TV to get the best performance from the PS3, I would need a 6 foot HDMI cable for the low price of $99.99 (Monster cable). I looked a less expensive cables at $79.99 but why are these cable so expensive? It's just copper, metal & rubber. (unless it gold plated) Seriously why the price gouging? Does it really make a major difference in performance or this another way retailers pad accessories with exaggerated markups to make up from the drastically reduced big ticket sale items?

You should be able to buy non-name brand cables for $20-30, probably even less. The satellite guy handed me a couple of HDMI cables as part of the install. HDMI is digital technology and either it works or doesn't work, no "tonal quality" aspects to these kind of cables. IMO the Monster brand is a triumph of marketing and obfuscation over engineering.

But I'll bet the Audiophiles will argue it to death :) They'll do scientific tests and long, drawn out listening tests in sterile environments to prove their point.

Get any HDMI cable as long as it supports v1.3 (version 1.3 which supports the high def. audio formats as well). You should be able to pick up cheap ones on the web.

I just bought an HDTV as well and was shocked by the price gouging on these. You can buy a 6ft cable for about $5 online.

An HDMI cable is an HDMI cable is an HDMI cable. They are digital and send 1's and 0's. It either works or it doesn't.

I was looking at a Sony KDL 46W4100 120hz HDTV but Busted Buy sold out of them at $2059.00. I kind of leery of online dealers on Amazon, I had friends order TV's arriving damaged then paying the shipping to do an exchange. Takes too long I always winds up being such a pain in the arse.

Funny thing about Best Buys salesmen, I was getting the high pressure pitch about Monster Cable. I told him there is no way I could spend that much on copper wire. He then said "if you buy this one you get a mail in rebate for a free Blue Ray movie from Miramax!" I took a look at it & peeled back the coupon, it expired back in March. I then showed it to the sales person & you could almost hear crickets. He then said it's still good & his friend got his after mailing in after the expiration. At that point I just walked out of the store.

I definitely recommend using www.monoprice.com for all your cabling needs.

And generally, as long as you get the 1.3 compliant cable, you will be fine. This rating means that the cable has larger bandwidth than the earlier versions, and will allow you to use any of the new high def audio formats that come on blu-ray disks (which is about the only use for the 1.3 spec right now...).

The length of the cable does actually start to become an issue upwards of 35-40 feet, so you would need to do more research then... but for anything less then that the monoprice cables will work just fine.

www.monoprice.com for all your home theater cabling needs. A 6' HDMI should run you no more than $10-20.

I've got monoprice cables for my entire HT setup. Not one complaint. And they're fast on the shipping.

EDIT: I guess I should have read the thread first. I'll never go anywhere else for HT cables, though.

    Not quite...

The thinner gauge cables tend to lose steam after about 6ft w/1080p (1080i/720p generally fine). See 'sparkly' dots (generally green, but can be white, other colors), your cable is struggling. Thicker gauge cables are recommended if going past 6ft and running 1080p. And no, f*** Monster cables, the Monoprice ones are just fine and what I am using with high end equipment.

I am designing a line of HDMI cables that will not only align the spins on all the electrons, but it will also balance each individual electron to reduce aural signal flutter and optic yaw caused by magneto-microresonances induced into the system by Out-of-Order Abhomic Factor Impedance that many lesser cables have.
