Does anyone have a head puller to fit 400 heads I could borrow/rent? The heads on my 400 engine are suck suck and I figured I'd ask before I spend a lot of time making one.

Pity your'e not in Australia, you could borrow mine.
It took me a solid day to make one, helped to have the gaskets on hand as templates to mark out the holes, (although it's worth checking everything with calipers / rulers before drilling anything

    Good luck

This is just a idea, if the head is really stuck on, (and sometimes it's like they are welded on) you may need to get a fairly thick piece of plate 20mm, 25mm? You can save a lot of time cutting out this type of material by using a waterjet machine. I have no idea if there is one in your area, but if they are not in the yellow pages, call Flow Corp in Seattle 253-8503500 and they might be able to give you the number of the company they sold one of their machines to in your area or close by. I may have the CAD file for that layout for them to use.
    Cheers MG

I'm wondering how many studs I need to push on to get the thing off. There are 14 studs and I notice the center 10 on both heads in 5 sets of 2 paired top and bottom, are the same bolt pattern. I have a milling machine and a 2"x1.5"x 6' bar of aluminum sitting here and I'm thinking I can make say 3 tools, each that hits 2 studs and will fit both heads. I think I'll give that a try, I can always make more to hit the rest of the studs if just pushing on 6 won't move it and they'll be a heck of a lot easier to handle than 1 moster plate.

I'll post pics of what I come up with.

Where are you going to grab the head?

By all the cam and cam cover studs I can get a hold of I think. I have the 1st one done and it fits every other set of studs on both heads, not not the ceter 5 sets like I was thinking. Now I'll make 2 more and give it a try.

The heads are usually stuck on because of a buildup of white stuff in the stud holes (aluminum oxide?).
I wonder if it would help to pour something into the stud holes to break the stuff up?

Worked like a charm, they popped right off. I cut a 30 degree angle on the end of the studs to held then stay centered in the head studs and greased the heck of of everything and it seemed to be the right answer. The pullers and the heads will probably be headed to ebay in the next few weeks if any one is interested.

I bought the engine with bad intentions.....the plan is to fit 4 valve TR heads to it and stuff it in my 308 :)
