Check the picture, I have one head stud that is corroded dirty like you see.

Not sure if I just want to clean it up with some oil and PB blaster to clean it up.

Should I replace that one just because why not?

On the block is there anything you guys have done to clean off the old gasket that's a bit less crazy than what im used to doing.

I have used Razor blades and Brake cleaner on stuff like this just wondering if theres something new I should know of if a razor blad is just bad news because of the aluminum.

I know you have to be very careful or you can gouge the aluminum slightly with razor blades.

I'm not even sure if someone has developed an attachement for a drill that could clean off your head and deck surfaces just looking for ideas i might not be thinking of.

For the stud, a wire wheel/brush mounted in a cordless drill. I'd be inclined to try a brass wheel on the gasket material, but probably too harsh for the aluminium.

Yes, I have similar corrosion on my exhaust bolts. I'll probably just steel wool most of the rust off them. If that doesn't do the trick, new ones aren't that expensive.

On the gaskets I just used 600 grit sandpaper on my 355 plug wire covers. Works well. Very mild abrasion so no gouging involved. I started with the edge of a flat screwdriver to get the major bits off then used the sandpiper to get a super smooth surface.

I was thinking maybe just my old standby brake clean to get most of the gasket off.

As for the corrosion I think ill pull that stud out wire wheel or something like will clean it up. I also want to get all the gunk out of that hole.

I know there is gasket removers out there but I have never used them.
Like permatex makes one. I just dont think I have ever actually thought about using the remover, But im sure its close to brake cleaner.

    Found this searching around
"The best way to remove gasket material safely is to use a carbide scraper. They are very sharp, machined perfectly flat and safe on aluminum."

Might need to look into one of those.

No power tools on that aluminum. A scotchbrite pad should get the corrosion off the stud. Probably no need to remove it and risk damaging the threads in the block.

To clean the piston, use 100% methanol ... with a little bit of rubbing, it will come right off.

Soda blaster, it is like a magic eraser that leaves nothing but clean aluminum! You can buy one for about $100 from Harbor Freight and a bag of 50lbs baking soda for about $40.

Here is a before and after of a 1982 223k mile EA81 I rebuilt, soda blasting was used for all the cleanup.

I have a soda blaster and never thought about blasting a casing kinda worry about it getting in everything.

And yes no power tools on the aluminum I know it will remover aluminum even if just slightly.

Scotch Brite and cleaning out the hole I'd rather not remove it if I don't have to.
