I wondered if anyone has tried header wraps to reduce engine bay temperatures and, therefore cabin and trunk temperatures ?

I have a hot spot in my trunk which has caused some of my carpet to fail. this seems to be caused by the proximity of the rear header to the boot.

I have lined the trunk with three layers of zircoflex heat shield material, reducing the heat but wondered why people didn't fit shrouds to the headers or ceramic coat them to achieve this any way at source - have dino headers failed before with this kind of treatment?

I am thinking of fitting a thermo tec shroud to the rear header which should reduce the heat being radiated into the boot.

However, being a numpty (English for occasional idiot) I don't wnat to do something really stupid.

Finally, I do have time to get the wheel and wheel arch cover off allowing me access to the manifold but I don't have time to take the entire trunk out before the Tour Auto event my wife and I do in early April.

Looks like an interesting product, is it playable or rigid, once a shape is formed will it keep it?

I replaced most of the heat shields with it. It is easy to work with, holds its shape and works well. If you get round to doing the job let me know and I will get a photo of underneathe the car. This is a pic of the alternator heat shield

    Snowy,
I assume that you do have the aluminum shield that sits between the engine and the trunk. This is a stock item with the manufacturer's plate on it. It should extend below the trunk and protect the bottom of the trunk from the mufflers. I have seen these modified for ease of installation, whereas the horizontal aspect (above the mufflers) has been removed.

The U.S. Smog version Dino did have the headers encased in a shroud. This both 1) allowed for increase temperature within the header for exhaust gas burning and 2) offered a bit of protection for adjacent components.

However, any modification of the headers, I believe, will have zero impact on cabin temperatures. If trunk temperatures are too high, I would create my own shield with aluminum foil in a double thickness sheet surrounding a blanket of insulating material. Lay this over the mufflers and secure by wrapping and pinching the foil about other structures. Has worked for me in my VW Delux Combi.

Take a look at North American 308GTB headers (NON CAT)....they had a heavy aluminum cladding welded over asbestos wrapping........the down side is hidden cracks of course.

But it did indeed aid in oxygenating unburned fuel as it traveled from the head to the exhaust tip......and reducing heat radiating into the engine compartment (which can cause other problems too)

Nice alternator heat shield, looks like it even protects from oil drips!
    Good job.

    Thanks Jim,

I have an aluminium heatshield vertically between the trunk and engine bay. Where the heat is coming in is at the bottom of the trunk where there is a cross member which runs near the exhaust header. I amg going to temporarily install a heat shield usin three layers of adhesive zircoflex and stick this to the bottom of the existing shield and then to the bottom of the trunk floor.

A quick fix i hope and then i will try some of the other proposed solutions but not a header blanket.
