Hi Dave, We've driven it many times. Always go straight thru. From our location it's about 16 hours. I-30 -> Texarkana -> I-440, exit 138A Little Rock/West Memphis -> 1-40 towards W Memphis -> 1-55 N exit 277 towards STL -> 1-57 N exit 66A toward Chicago -> I-70 E to IND. Except for one time, we've stopped in MO on the way back. We have motel reservations but unsure about going (not so good weekend for "horse babysitter") and have scheduled car events in Europe in Apr, May, June, July (iffy - Hockheim is ?), Sept. Have fun. Carol
My Dad and I went the second year of the race and stayed at a local resident's house turned B&B for race weekends. They are out there, just do a search on google for "bead and breakfast" "US Grand Prix" (or Brickyard, INDY 500...etc). It was very cheap and our hosts even supplied a ride from the airport. The other guests were all high class and it made the weekend pretty unique. Once my Dad's hip recovers we will likely start going again. I happened to be working in Indy the 1st year of the race and had a company paid room at the downtown Residence Inn...where the FCA had their meeting. Hence the current addiction to all things Ferrari...man was I shocked at the prices (being way lower then I ever imagined).
Hi Dave, Save some time to visit the Ferrari gathering at Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis on Friday afternoon. The only real downside to the drive is the road construction/poor road condition situation in northeast Arkansas. It's only by dumb luck that we have avoided being tagged in the zero speed tolerance areas in that area of Arkansas - not that the poor road surface really encourages much in the way of spirited driving. You can always hope it's fixed by now but progress has seemed to be slow. Caution is not a bad idea in Illinois and Indiana as well. The revenue rangers always seem to be rather active. Still hope to go if we can arrange "sitters" for the critters. Enjoy. John

FYI, I just priced plane tickets from Dallas to Indy using expedia.com. If you leave Friday or Saturday, and come back Monday, there are tons of options for under $300. That's pretty tempting, even when budgeting in a rental car for a few days.
Flights are cheap and fast, but I simply HATE the degrading nonsense that goes with commercial flight these days. If there's not an ocean involved, I'll choose to drive
