The detent ball and spring are apparently missing from the headlamp twist-actuator knob on my 1980 400i#28903..Could someone please explain to me exactly how it is supposed to be situated within the switch..and what diameter is this little devil...the contacts are all properly soldered and in place...any info on this subject will be most appreciated I know that we all encounter this problem sooner or later, and to a greater or lesser degree... thank you all again in advance..Jacques.

I recently repaired a broken solder in my switch so I know the setup. When you pull the outer plastic piece off the switch you should have an empty hole where the spring fits in. The spring just fits in the sleeve and it is fitted directly from the top and slides down. The spring top when fitted sits just a bit below the top of the hole. The ball sits on top of the spring and with a little dab of grease will not fall off because it sits right on top. The ball is slightly larger diameter than the spring OD; I don't have an exact size.

If you don't get a measurement of the ball I can bull it off next week and measure it for you. Spring is relatively soft.

If you have good parts the ball will offer a bit of resistance when pushing on the plastic "knob". The spring and ball give just enough pressure inside the plastic so the switch stays in either the on or off position and does not flop around without a bit of force from the driver.

    I hope that helps.
