The headlight switch in my friend’s 1986 328 GTB is not working. When trying to operate the headlights the light pods stay in the down position. I don’t think it is the pod motors since usually one will work and not both motors go out at the same time.

Can we get just the light switch or do we need to get the complete set (with blinker switch, etc)?

Can the switch be repaired? We were told of a spring and ball bearing that are very tiny and impossible to replace if lost.

    Thanks for any reply.

Do the lights illuminate (with pods staying down), or is there NO related action when the switch is rotated - no lights, no click, no pod movement, nothing?

(What I'm getting at: have you checked the relays and fuses?)

Yes, no action when the switch is rotated; no lights, no click, no pod movement, nothing . Checked the relay - is good - as well as the fuse - is good.

Can someone please post or pm me the electrical schematic to diagnose this issue more.

    I appreciate your help.

You may want to check to see if the wires that go to the contacts inside the headlight knob are still soldered to the contacts. They often become disconnected. At the knob end of the headlight stalk, there is a retaining ring that holds the knob in position. You need to remove the knob by holding on to the stalk with one hand and the knob with the other and pull the knob away from the retaining ring. However, before you do this put a plastic bag over the knob because once you pull the knob off, the detent ball, which causes the action when you turn the knob, will fly out. Below that is a spring, but this is usually held in with a bit of grease.

Two other potential failure points are when the pivot end cracks and and the stalk gets loose in the housing of the plastic contact end, inside the knob, gets loose and causes misalignment of the contacts in relation to the knob.

If you need to have the plastic parts fixed, Verell at unobtaniumsupply.com can rebuild the switch.

    As above from Joe,
Once you pull off from the light stalk, you will see what's wrong immediately, it happened on mine, re soldered all OK now.
Let us know how you get on.
