Last night, when I turned on the headlights, I felt something go "crunch". Now, the rotating switch at the end of the stalk just sort of turns freely, though I am able to get the lights to stay on (and off) by fiddling with it. I found a replacement switch assembly at Dinoparts for 765 Euros (yikes!), but they also have some small plastic parts that they say are to repair "damaged headlight switches" for around 68 Euros. Any ideas?

    A couple of candles?
Only drive in the daytime? :)

I did have a similar problem on my old 160K mile Suburban before it died. The switch kinda worked with some fiddling. The lights would *mostly* stay on once you got them on. I'd suck it up and fix it, but I can't advise on whether the fix-it-kit will work I'm afraid. Its a galling amount of money for such a small amount of lighting.

Mind you the lights on my Miura make the Dino lights look like Xenons...

Thanks for the suggestions. :) Actually, our car is fitted with H4s, and they work pretty well. I guess I'll contact Dinoparts and find out what they think.

You can remove the rotating knob to see what is damaged inside. It is held on by a collar that snaps into it. Take a razorblade and slide it between the collar and the knob to lever them apart. Once you have a little bit of a gap, you can get a small screwdriver in there. Pop the collar out and slide it down the shaft.

Now carefully slide the knob off of the shaft. There is a dentent ball and spring that locate the knob, be careful not to lose them. Most likely one of the contacts is damaged. I have made new contacts in the past from sheet brass that you can buy at a hobby store. The parts repair kit looks like a viable option as well.

    Brian:

Great info. Thanks! I looked it over early this morning, and the switch seems to work more or less okay. However, it has rotated on the shaft so that the etched symbols no longer face the driver, and it feels a little wobbly.

I'll definitely use your input to get a better idea of what the issue is.

I had to rebuild my switch after the vehicle compliance folks here broke mine for the second time, after the shippers broke it the first time. During the repair the piece inside the rotating section broke into several smaller pieces and i couldnt find a spare anywhere without the $1200 price of a whole new switch assembley. I made a small mould which i clamped onto the stem and poured a new one using a plastic resin which has worked perfectly since then.Personally i would buy the one from dinoparts as it looks just right to me. Oh and put masking tape around the stem when you remove the knob one small slip with the blade or screw driver and you will remove paint.

Just happened to see this thread.
If it's not too late, I can repair your switch. Got started when I broke my own wiper stalk off. I've got a set of molds for all the switch parts & have been repairing 308,328,Mondial, GT4, Daytonas, 330, etc. switches for 4 or 5 years now. Ask DinoDriver if you want a reference, he knows my work in general.

See this Fchat thread for pictures of some of my column switch repairs:

It's not too late. I haven't done anything with it yet. I guess I just pop the switch and all the internals off the end of the stalk and send them to you in a baggie? What will the approximate cost be?

    Thanks,
    DS

Yep! If Verell says he's got a fix for something, it'll be first class and reasonably priced whether it be metal or plastic. Besides, he's now fully retired so he has plenty of spare time for these projects. Ain't that right, Mrs. Boaen? :)

Click on my name & select 'send email to Verell'. I will return my current price list, & address to ship it to. Also I'll have your eMAIL for any further correspondence.

Send me the entire stalk with all the pieces you have. I mold new parts directly onto the stalk so they don't slip around & come off.
Also you might consider sending me the switch for a full reconditoning service.

    Yeah, RIIIGGGHHHTTTT,
I'm thinking of going back to work so I can get some much needed rest! Don't know how I did everything I do while holding down an 8-6 job as well!
