FIRST - my '73 UK GTS has CIBIE headlights - were these original for UK cars, or would it have had Carello units that have been replaced at some point?

In any event, the bulb that should work for dipped, full beam lights has blown and I need to replace it. I've looked across the threads to see if there is anything about how to replace a bulb, but cannot find anything. Could someone give me a clue where to start, or direct me to a past thread if I am being blind. Also, do people tend to replace with original type bulbs or are there brighter modern ones worth considering? I do occasionally drive it at dusk / in the dark.

All advice gratefully received - still a novice owner and determined to do some of my own work rather than wheeling it straight round to a garage.

SECOND - what top RPM do people tend to spin their engines up to? My engine was rebuilt about 6,000 miles ago. I have done about 850 miles so far and it seems very willing to spin up to about 6,000 rpm where to date I have operated a self-imposed limit. The books suggest peak power at about 7,500rpm. I do want to look after the engine and don't want to stress it too much......on the other hand, I don't want to molly coddle it as it is meant to be driven and it does sound wonderful. Oil pressure is steady bang in the middle of the dial and no leaks.........again, advice and thoughts welcomed.

Thanks - this really is an extraordinarily useful forum!

Check the lens/lamp and see if it says H4. If so, you can find the bulbs at any motorcycle shop or online like Amazon. Do not use higher wattage bulbs with your stock electrical harness and stay away from any bulb that has a blue coating. Here is an example of what to look for:

When I had mine on a dyno it produced peak HP at very close to redline. We ran it up to 7500 rpm on the dyno, and I certianly saw over 7,000 PRMs on many occasions. They sound great, and run great up there.

As to your headlights. I don't know what came on factory European cars. I suspect it may vary from country to country. US spec cars had Westinghouse headlights, and maybe Wagners?

What does the parts book show?

I'm sure this is buried in some thread here, but 03.490.800's or 03.495.800's that have the separate parking light bulb?

RHD Carello headlights for the UK had the extra parking lamp and were stamped 05.495.800 on the rear of the reflector, 05.490.700 on the glass and 03.490.502 on the rubber shield.
Here's a previous thread and the numbers match ones I have:

As I understand it when the engine goes to max revs everything stretches a little and the rings go further up the bore than normal. If they have never been there before there can be a tight spot, and that is the wrong time to find it. A prolonged period of slow revving will not help this situation and perhaps make things worse. I would start gradually building up the revs under light load and then eventually open it up properly. Certainly I took mine to high revs under light load during this period..

First you need to remove that elusive chrome trim ring that covers the mounting fasteners. I use a coat hanger, bend about a 1/2 inch to nearly 180 degrees and insert it into the space adjacent to the trim ring and then pull. It is spring loaded so you'll need to pull in three spots; I suggest the bottom first as the clearance is tightest there. This is by far the most difficult part and a bit unnerving as you may feel uneasy about the amount of pressure you need to exert. Understandably so, but you gotta do it.

NOTE: This link shows accessing inside the ring while I prefer to pull on the outside of the chrome trim ring.

Once the chrome trim ring is off, locate the large Phillips head screws that secure the assembly to the car body and remove them (do not remove the small screws as they are either the subassembly capture mounts or the up-down and Right-Left focus adjustments).
Once the assembly is free from the car pull it all out and detach the electrical connector. The bulb on H4's is held in place by a two sided bayonet-style catch. Push in and rotate then the bulb will be free.

    Hope this helps,

Not revving your engine is detrimental to the smile on your face - do us all a favour and drive with a big smile!

Seriously though shifting at 6000RPM is great and yours is well past break in.
