My cousin is in need of some health insurance when his runs out. He was asking me about my health insurance and what I thought of blah blah blah.

I told him, "Richard, I honestly am not well versed in this subject at all, but I'll bet you that there are plenty of solid opinions on the subject on Fchat. Send me a quick letter, asking the questions you need to ask, and I will post it on Fchat so you can see the responses."

    So here is the letter:

    Any thoughts guys?

Indeed he is! In fact, he helped me out a ton with getting my car insurance straight!

If he doesn't chime in here I'll just have to track him down and ask him over a couple rounds of drinks :D

A MSA (medical savings acct) might be right up your alley, if they are sold in your state. All pre-tax money, you can roll it over year to year, never taxed if used on medical stuff (really broadly defined: glasses, aspirin, ace wraps etc) and MUST be associated with a high deductible catastrophic plan.

I understand if you end up with money in it that never gets used it can eventually be rolled into your IRA.

down side is there are usually only a very few insurance carriers that offer them in any particular state.

    Thanks Bruce and John!

I know lots about property and casualty insurance, but health insurance is like voodoo to me!

Here's my advice: Don't get sick!

Ha, I knew this was likely to happen.

I don't know how much of a difference this makes, but Richard will be starting Tulane Medical School in the fall and will find a job in New Orleans to occupy time until then.

    Does this change anything?

I'm not an insurance agent, but since I'm self employed, I know more about this subject than I care to...

you might check out these companies:

    http://www.assuranthealth.com/
    http://www.goldenrule.com
    http://www.lablue.com/web/default.asp

Also, interview a few independant insurance agents in your area, have them make their pitches, choose one who you like who has a plan that suits you. They should do some work for your business, so don't be afraid to make them work -- and if they give you any bullsh!t like "I can't leave any detailed info about our policies behind for you to look at and read over, but we'll send you everything after you sign up, and then you can just cancel if you don't like it..." help them find the door.

There are a few organizations out there that offer health insurance to the self employed -- you might look into your local Chamber of Commerce or entrepreneurial organizations (here in CT there is the CBIA, CT Business and Industry Association). Also, if you're a member of a union, sometimes insurance can be had thru them.

There are a few "self-employed" organizations (i.e. the NASE -- National Association of the Self Employed is one) that allow you to buy their insurance, but also require that you become a member of their organization -- that always sounds sketchy to me, and I haven't found that the rates or their plans are any better. Plus, many times, the insurance is offered by the "MEGA Life & Health Insurance Co." Like I'm going to buy health services from a company called "MEGA" anything.... Ugh. Watch out for these, and read the fine print.

For what your cousin is looking for I suspect that Golden Rule or Assurant Health (or similar) are probably his best bet. They will offer an insanely low rate to get him on board, and then jack it up quickly over the next couple/few years. But as long as he remains healthy with no pre-existing conditions, he can just keep bouncing back and forth between two low cost carriers (taking advantage of the low initial rates) each time one of the companies gets too greedy.

    just my $0.02

    Chris
