Has anyone left the rear heat shields, over the muffler, off after doing work? Putting the car back together, and am considering leaving them off. Only concerned about the heat affecting the rear light housings and possibly air box. Thoughts?

Ferrari put it there for a very good reason.

    Leave it.

My 90 348 came with just one heat shield, the upper one that holds the intake tubes. The left tail light was melted badly, the right side a bit as well. Of course, I had the two-can exhaust which was the cause.

Recently, I replaced the two with a single can from a Spider. Now there's plenty of air space and I'm wondering if adding additional heat shields are necessary.

Bottom line tho... the tail lights are NLA new (except occasional NOS on eBay) and $$$$

I'm curious, why would you want to leave them off?

I'll leave them on. I just think the engine bay looks cleaner with them off... But, I don't want to buy new lights because they melted...

You'll get a slow down light from too much heat in the air boxes. I was driving around with the shield off while I was having it wrapped in carbon, looks great now :D

Do not remove! My car just passed 12K but went 20 years with only 3200. One stop light socket chipped and the connector popped apart last week. I actually added a strip of insulation behind them lots of slow traffic cruising and doing great. It gets warm but no melting. The stop lights are right over the cat pipes. Not cool. If anything it need more and bigger radiators. I think I might duct my fans.
