heat shields

Now that raises a question of differences between L, M and E series Dino's. I've heard that the heat shields were left unpainted (natural aluminum), and I've heard that they were painted a black crinkle finish (like the pictures above). And were all heat shields finished identically?

So did the finish vary depending on which series Dino? My engine is out, and now would be the time to make sure the heat shields are in the correct finish.

 

This is great information.

As my car #1624 is mostly untouched and still has most of it's finishes I would now bet that M cars would of had this same finish.

Can someone give me the dimensions of that tab?

I had a NOS heat shield at one time and it had the black crinkle coat paint. Have a nice used one on my '73 GT and it has the same finish as well.

 

I have the black wrinkle finish on the larger heat shields only (my early E and L).
The 3 smaller ones are just aluminum, no finish.

Heatshields 2 and 26 were both black on #07610.

Is this a hard finish to recreate? Can it be bought out of a rattle can?

There is a unique textured finish that I would be concerned about loosing with a rattle can. A very thin layer of paint would be nice, but I haven't tried anything yet. I just added this to my project list while my car is partly apart (coating headers, going through entire suspension, replacing some hoses, etc).

Has anyone successfully repainted these without losing the texture?

I have 05898 and the shield looks original with aluminium on the inside (towards the exhaust headers) and wrinkle black on the outside (toward the bulkhead).

 

Hi all
I started fabrication of a complete set of heat shields for my early L-series this afternoon. The shields will be made like a sandwich of two 1 mm aluminum plates with a fiber woven heat resistant welding protection curtain in between. I base all my measurements from FC pictures of original shields. I plan to use aluminum rivets on all bracket connections as original used but will "upgrade" all brackets to stainless steel to reduce corrosion development.

So I just finished fabrication of the 5 heat shields for my early L -series and I believe the only outstanding shield is the aluminum plate shield above the exhaust silencer (Someone please correct me if I'm missing anything). The first picture shows what was left of the original shields before I started the reconstruction work. I can take further pictures if anyone need these for their own work. Does anyone know if the forward heat shield against the cabin bulkhead should be painted in black wrinkle?

I recall there was no consensus if there was a heat shield installed above the muffler on early Dinos, despite it being shown in the 206 and L-series parts manuals. Does anyone have some new info?

 

Thanks Matthias......I've been shopping paint. Just need the wife out of the house so I can cure the wrinkles in the kitchen oven.

Make sure the smell is all gone before she gets home, mine has a very good sense of smell and I was banned from curing brake components in the house 20 years ago.
I'm thinking a cheap old oven in the workshop....

 

I think you are correct in your statement above Matthias. My early L-series came with a homemade exhaust including an aluminum heat shield. The previous owner Mr. Bugge had the exhaust custom made and his mechanic most likely just copied the old heat shield setup. I will ask Bugge later this summer, maybe he remembers the details. Anyway I made a new shield for the Ansa exhaust today and also made new shields for the two fuel tanks...That's all aluminum shields done and dusted.

I was wondering if anyone had received heat shields from Superformance?

Since there has been so much talk about quality from the suppliers.

How do they fit? How is the finish?

I bought an alternator heat shield from Superformance and the quality looks fine. I haven't fitted it yet but can see no reason why it shouldn't fit as expected.
