I've been rebuilding/recovering my center console. I took lots of pictures so I could put it all back together correctly and positioned my cable controls left to right as 2 temp controls then 2 def/heat controls. As far as I can remember, every car I've seen is laid out this way. The picture below I recently took when John Youngdahl came by so I know I'm not halucinating or working with bad memories (I am recovering from a head injury?!?).

I had reason to look something up in my owner's manual yesterday and I came across the drawing of the heater controls (1980, Page 44) - But in a different orientation. It's something I never caught before. After looking at it a bit, its sort of an early version of zone control and letting the passenger select their heat level.

Did any cars come from the factory set up as in the manual? Has anyone done this? I mean its a simple fix to move the bezels and cable holders on the backside. I think I actually like the manual's setup better.

Mine were per OM (left temp/def - right temp/def). When one bezel broke, I replaced all 4 with Verrel's plus installed new cables, and noted there is a subtle but important difference between the underside lever for temp and def. Best get those right to get the proper full cable travel.

Thanks! Yeah, those were duly noted in my pre-disassembly pictures. Not only are the levers different length but the cable holders have different positions and angles. I think because I was so in tune with getting those positions right is why the picture in the manual suddenly looked different.
