Inspecting some QV manuals, I've noticed differences in the heat levers that controls temperature and air distribution. In the QV from 1982 the levers are in a different position than on the QV 1983-84 (and 85 I suppose). I attach an image and you can see that the numbers are different, and the description in the manual also, of course.
    Resuming:
1982 levers position: LH heat temp - LH heat distribution / RH heat control - RH heat distribution
1983-84-85 levers position: LH heat temp - RH heat temp/ LH heat distribution - RH heat distribution

Could you check your cars to see if the 82 have the levers in different position? It sounds strange, and I'm doubting if my levers works this way (83 QV US).

Although my car (80 US model) was not setup this way... Here is what is shown in the 80 manual. I've recently recovered/rebuilt my center console so I have moved my levers to match the manual. I think it makes sense. Passenger can control their temp by the lever closest to them.

Left temp / Left distribution / Right distribution / Right heat
