Hi there, I'm going through my heater cores and piping and wanted to ask if anyone has ever installed / considered installing a heater shut off valve? If so, where in they system would/did you install it? Goal is to eliminate coolant flow to the heater cores in summer months under the assumption that it would keep the cabin cooler in summer (no heat leakage around valves / ducting flaps etc). Thank you!

I was thinking of installing around this location (red dot in this figure). Also wondering if I should install two cut-off valves. Thanks for any thoughts! Image Unavailable, Please Login

I did it on my 328. Complete waste of time.

Seems like to truly isolate would require two valves. One at the heater pipe exit from motor and another at the y return from radiator.
I thought of shutoff valves for mine and ended up working on ac system. I got the ac working and now it’s keeps me cool. Also, I don’t know how much the heater hose is contributing to the cabin heat compared to the radiator. Like previous poster mentioned - prob not much difference isolating heater hose.

I put one on my 88 3.2 Mondial at Tim Stanford's suggestion, when I was at his shop to pick up my car from major service he noticed that hot air was coming out of the vents before it got cool, he showed me a 308 he had in for service where they had put a cut-off valve, a simple ball valve in the left rear wheel arch, mine works great and since I live in Florida I've rarely used the heat, changed the temperature of my AC air from 49° to 39°. I got a 3/4-in ball valve from the hardware store and the bonus is that it has a bleed valve built into it and it's at the high point of my system.
I know my heater valve was leaking and I probably should have just replaced that, but the service was done and I didn't want to leave the car, so I just installed the manual valve when I got home

Your model already has manual shutoff valves so, unless yours are broken (or mis-adjusted) and leaking flow, adding another one will make no difference. (Alden's situation is different -- he added a manual shutoff valve because his '88 electric shutoff valve is not working correctly.)

Mine were not installed for the purpose of lowering interior temp but they dont. As Steve pointed out the factory installed valves. If they are working more is not better.

Why did you put yours in?

A misguided desire to be able to isolate that section of the cooling system in the event of a leak.

I did the same as Brain....the incoming flow cut. I see Brian did also the return flow cut. You have to do the return flow also otherwise warm water is still coming up to the heater cores.
