In another race venue, 26-year-old Renault driver Heiki Kovalainen finished the 2007 NYC marathon yesterday in 3:36:56. I'm happy to say that, at nearly twice his age (50), with injuries, I beat him by a minute and a half. The young whippersnapper!

I'm thinking he must have been drafting off me -- those Renault boys are used to being in the back of the pack this year!

Did he have a hoard of bodyguards around him like Puff Daddy did a few years back? It was pretty audacious.

How many people know who Heikki Kovalainen is in the US that were at the NY Marathon? At the most I'd say 50, and that is pushing it.

I'd like to see Michael S do a marathon. He is in terrific shape, and could probably do it in under 3 hours. Lance Armstrong did it in about 2:45 this year, I think.

I was pretty oblivious to people around me, so I can't say for sure. But a quick review of the finishing results indicated that there were several Team ING finishers within half a minute or so of Heiki, so he probably was part of a running group finishing around the same time. But I suspect that's about it - he was part of a group, not the lead guy with a bunch of hangers on.

My wife saw Lance Armstrong finish, and she said he had a whole crowd with him. And good for him - strong finish, substantial improvement from last year, and a good cause.

I have a friend who got tripped by a French tourist trying to take a picture behind him. He pretty much had to walk the rest.
