Hello everyone!! My name is Michael, I live in a small town in Upper Michigan(U.S.A.). I have loved cars, all cars, ever since I was a young boy. Ferrari, Lamborghini(any exotic really), Chevrolet (Z06 Corvette), Chevy/GM musclecars, and streetrods/hotrods from the 1930's. I currently own a 2008 Z06 Corvette(because it's all I could afford). I work in a paper mill. We make paper for books and magazines.

I have an overwhelming desire to constantly better myself. I want more than anything to find a different career so that I can afford to buy the car(s) and have the lifestyle I have loved and dreamed about my entire life. I am just very unsure about which direction to go(I know, I should have thought of this years ago). I have thought about going back to school but, being 37 years old, I sometimes think I am too old to start a new career and I should just stay where I am in my life. BUT, the other part of me does not want to be looking back on my life at 60 years old and wishing I would have at least tried.

So, to all of the forum members here that have been or are in a similar situation, what are your recommendations?? What path did you take to get where you are today? Remember, I am 37 so, going to school for 10 years and starting a career at 47 or 48 is probably not the best idea? I appreciate any and all replies and input. I look forward to hearing from all of you.

Sorry for rambling on. Thank you for your time

    Michael.

Have you thought about starting your own business while temporarily maintaining your current job? Or how about getting into a new career that requires less than 4 years of school, like real estate sales or a stock broker?

    Welcome Michael.

Don't let the desire for material possessions guide your life, if you're happy in what you do be thankful.; money isn't everything.

Hey, owning an 08' Vette isn't doing too bad!

Thanks for the reply! Here is some info. Never married(have a girlfriend that works), no kids, can't afford too much of a pay cut (house and car payments). I work swing shift at a paper mill. 1 week I work 7am-3pm, 1 week 3pm-11pm, 1 week 11pm -7am etc. If I were to continue my education it would probably have to be online because of my schedule. I would like to have my own biz but being in such a small town(13,000 people), I don't really know what would be a good biz to start that is not already established here. I have not ruled out relocating but I would have to have a good job to go to and without a degree or alot of experience, how do I make that happen? Thanks for the help!!

anunakki: Thanks for the advice about subscribing and the business forums. I will definitely do that as well!!

What is your debt to income level? If it is pretty low, I would think of a student loan to finish school and maybe law school after that. When people ask me how did I do it, I tell them, "stay in school."

Next to education, the small business idea and stock brokering / real estate are the best ones. In fact with the time it takes to get either lisence, the markets should be beginning to turn around.

(You know I thought about it and the way M. introduced himself is about the best way I can think of to do it, and ask the question he asked. Well done and welcome to FChat.)

I opened this thread expecting the usual routine and was pleasantly surprised.

Michael, welcome to Fchat! With regard to businesses, you don't have to limit yourself to B&M (brick and mortar). There are very low barriers to entry in E-biz (internet based). At the same time, competition is fierce because barriers to entry are so low.

    Best of luck to you.

Mike, I can tell you from my own experiences over the last 5 years, GO TO COLLEGE.

You are young, and it won't take 10 years, do it in 6.

What my concern for you is the same concern I have for me: if you become unemployed in 2-3, 10 years, THAT is when you will wish you had a Degree. The Degree may mean nothing to you, but TRUST ME - when you are applying for jobs, one of the first things corporate america can do is root people out from consideration when they do not check the check box for 'College Degree y/n ?'.

I finally landed a halfway decent job, it pays pretty good, AND I am going back to college to finish my Degree this Summer.

I am overqualified for a lot of IT jobs, the problem is I never get past the pre-screening at a lot of the 'better' corporate jobs because I do not have a 4-year degree.

I feel like an ass asking this, but what do you do in the papermill that allows you to afford a $70,000+ car without an education....I'm asking because I may drop out of law school.

Your in the paper industry? Sorry to hear! I only say this because I am too. I don't work for the mills but rather a converter. The business is extremely tought right now, ESPECIALLY for the mills. Like you, I'm at a cross roads and looking for something new. I just finished my MBA here in Dallas (SMU).

I worked and went to school at the same time. It can be done. I just say, do what you have to do. No matter you decision, the first steps are the hardest. Find something, commit to it, and bust your ass doing it. Things will fall in place. Set you goals and keep your eyes on them. Good luck to you.

Out of curiosity, what mill do you work for? Is it New Page up there?

Thanks for all of the info and advice!! It does make me come up with more questions though.

8snake: You mentioned e-biz, how does someone get into that? What would I need to learn and where do you go to learn it?? What are some good e-businesses to get into?

Whisky: I am seriously considering going back to school. The only problem I have is deciding what to go to school for. Business management, Accounting, IT, Finance, or something else. I don't want to spend the time to get a degree in a field that there is NO demand for, or one that the pay isn't there. I am just not sure which field to study. The only other problem is that there are no universities in my area, just a community college. Would that be enough??

Joker57676: I have worked there for 3 years. I work in a small department, nothing too important. The way I can afford a $70,000 car is that I only have the car and insurance payment and the house payment to make. The rest of my money goes into my savings and my retirement plans. Don't quit Law school!! You will be much farther ahead if you finish. I wish I had done something like that when I was younger instead of waiting until 37 to try and figure it out.

Justhrowit: Yes, it is New Page. Thanks for the great advice!!

Please keep the replies coming!! I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your advice!!! Being new to this forum and not really knowing anyone here, I really didn't know what to expect. But I must say that I am very glad that I have joined here and met some very nice people. Thanks again!!!

Hi Michael, welcome to the board.

You know of course that you can't buy a faster modern car than a Z06 for that kind of money. But you are aware of Ferrari used model pricing? For that $70k you could have gotten many different models, from a Testarossa to a 355. 328 and 348s can be had in the low $40k range. Of course, they're slower, maintenance would be more and no warranty. But if you really wanted a Ferrari you could have made it happen by now!
