I'm going to buy a car soon. No more than $25k, I'm putting anywhere from $3-5k down, the rest is a loan. I'm deciding between a 2008-09 v6 challenger, 02-04 vette, or a 2008-2011 mustang. One factor I can't figure out is how much it will cost to register the car in Louisiana. I may buy it in Missouri or Kansas, the. Register it in Louisiana. I was wondering if that's a bad idea and I should just do it all in Louisiana, and does anyone have an idea how much it would cost? I've already looked into insurance, monthly payments, etc.

I know it's not Ferrari but it's a stepping stone! I have no doubt people in this forum had experience buying cars in Louisiana.

    Any help appreciated

I think the reg is $275, but then you will have to pay the local sales tax of where every you move. So if you move to Slidell, you'll have to pay 8.75% sales tax or what ever you paid for the car or it's value at the time of the move and registration.

I know several people who got transferred with there companies out of town, they buy a car in GA, pay sales tax there, then when they move back home, they have to pay it again to register it in LA. Several just went out and bought new cars.

That doesnt sound too bad I was worried it'd be over a thousand or something like that. Do you have any idea what the tax would be in Bossier city/Shreveport? I'm getting stationed at Barksdale AFB.

And your friends from Georgia registered it there and then had to pay again when they got to lousiana? That doesn't sound promising

It will be over 2 thousand with tax..
Call it whatever you want, registration fee, state / local sales tax, notary fee, doc fee, vanity saints license plate fee, ect.... the easy calculation is 1/10 of the cost of your car will be given to the rude fat lady behind the counter at the DMV

If you are going to buy an unreliable sports car for 25, why not look into the myriad of good performing drivers cars- m3, 996, s4, lotus elise, clk or e55??

Even if you buy it and register it in another state, if you move to Louisiana and register it here you'll have to pay the sales tax here too. Orleans Parish is 9%. So whatever you paid in, say, Kansas, when you transfer it here, you'll have to pay the difference. They actually even tried to get me to repay taxes on a car that was originally bought here, then I moved to Florida, and I came back. I had to find the original registration to prove to them that I had already paid Louisiana taxes.

Nothing to disagree with what is said above. I was really torqued off when I moved to LA and they charged me sales tax on the vehicles I had owned for years and already paid sales tax on. Based on that I own other cars out of state.

$25,000 X .08 = $2000 plus fees. I don't recall the fees being bad, and once you are in it isn't bad. I think I just paid $60.00 for three years.

Some states have reciprocity agreements and give you a credit for tax paid in other states.

I could be wrong but I think the reciprocity is only good for like 30 days, this allows you to buy a can in another state that you all along plan on bringing to Louisiana and not being hit twice for taxes right away, but for those that wait a while I believe have do it all over again. gotta love the tax man ... :)

Ugh. I guess I'll be saving more for registration fees than I thought. That bites, but thanks for all the information, much appreciated!

I must be missing something here, say I live and work in New York in 2004 and buy a new Chevy Cavalier, in 2011 I accept a job in Louisiana and move to Louisiana. I have 30 days to register my car in Louisiana after establishing residence so on day 5 I go to the DMV to register the car. Are you all saying I will be charged sales tax on the Chevy Cavalier I purchased in 2004 while living and working in New York? How can they charge sales tax when a sale did not occur in Louisiana ? Also are they charging tax on the 2004 value or the 2011 value which would be significantly less? I have bought several cars out of state while living in LA (currently awaiting delivery of one right now) and have only had to pay Louisiana sales tax so I am a bit confused.

Out-of state dealerships do the legwork for you if they are states that have reciprocating agreements with LA. They take your taxes as they are required to by law, but pay the tax to your state and when you get back you only pay the local tax.

Now, if you are an out of state resident that moves to LA... depending where you move from, you might have to pay tax on NADA value of your car. Most states have a reciprocating agreement and you dont pay anything when you register it to LA though.

If you paid tax and registered a car in another state - LA will charge you sales tax on a portion of the blue book when you register it in LA.

So when i moved here i found that absurd. So i drove on AR plates for a long time.

If you buy a car in another state but don't register it in the state you bought it in- they may collect sales tax that would then be credited to you bill when you go to register in LA.
Some states collect, some don't. FL does. But i don't believe TX does.
