I have scanned the archives and am very desperate. I have a 79 308 GTB with loose alternator belt. I can deflect the belt about an inch with slight pressure of 1 finger. The inside of the pulleys are very shiney and the belt was squeeling. Battery went dead. I'm pretty sure I need belt change , but cannot get a wrench onto the backside of the nut. There is just no room to get my adult hand into space between frame from bottom. (I don't have a lift, so it might be dooable but have the car on jackstands with wheel and wheelwell off). My 12 year old son can get his small hand in there to get a socket on, but we can't even get a ratchet on it. I am in desperate need of advice as huge great local last run of the year this Sunday and I really want to go.
Anybody have detailed secret with pictures? Please help!!!!!

It's kind of a bugger if your alt is frozen on the pivot bolt (lower enigne mount) & you can't get the top bolt behind the alt loose enough to increase the tenison...

On my car I ended up cutting the upper braket off in order to pry the alt forward in order to remove the lower bracket from the block while it was still attached to the alt.

I don't think there are a lot of real secrets, you have to decide what you need to sacrifice to get the thing out. It's a tight design and once yu get it out make sure you lube/lots of corrosion protection on the pivot braket for the next time.

    Best of luck

I had a similar problem when I needed to get my alt rebuilt . Fortunately I have a lift and with it up in the air and a few extensions and universal joints I was able to get on the back nuts and get them off. So its just a matter of manuvering the wrenches. Sorry but its just the way

I remember in order to loosen off the alternator you have to get a 17 mm ring spanner, cut it half (why not?) so that it is short enough to fit in there. Then you can get another ring spanner to hook over the cut off stem and use that.

It does work and the only disadvantage is that you now have half a 17 mm ring spanner which is only good for removing 308 alternators....

    good luck

Try different combinations of sockets (1/2" driver vs 3/8" drive), normal, deep well, short or long extensions. I was able to get mine loose with normal stuff.

Or maybe I used a 17mm box end wrench to get to it (I think that's the correct size). Keep trying, it can be done with out having to resort to cutting stuff up or buying anything more unusual than a knuckle joint or extra extension.

If you jack up the rear of the car and using extensions (lots of them), you can reach the backside of the nut from the drivers side of the car. Essentially, you need someone applying pressure to the alternator so the belt is tight and someone under the car on the drivers-side using a socket and lots of extensions. You'll probably need a swivel to get the angle correct.

I was frustrated as well until I tried the approach above.
