I have a 1978 308, and I am having problems where my exterior lights might turn on when I engage the switch, but most of the time I hear a click when I try to turn on the lights and none of my exterior lights come on.

Does anyone have any ideas what this might be?

So you turn the switch and the headlights pop up, pull down on the switch and hear a click but no lights come on? Sounds like a bad relay to me. Try switching the relay (over by the fuse boxes) with a different one and see if the lights come on.

You might try posting (or moving this post) to the Tech section. Or searching the tech section for related threads. Good luck. -m

Well, I would start by checking the fuses. But, if you hear a "Click" sound when you try to turn them on. That sounds to me like it could be a bad Relay. Does the sound seem to come from in the fuse panel area on the bottom of the Passenger side dashboard? If so, look in your Fuse box area, Owners Manual, and/ or on the back of the fuse box cover to see if there is a dedicated Relay for the lights. I am pretty sure that there is. If so, take out that Relay. Give it a gentle shake and/or a couple of taps. Then put it back in and see if it works. Whether it does after that or not, it could still be a possible culprit. Good Luck!

I had a similar problem except there were more than the outside lights that were not functioning. Could be a bad relay however I read on a number of posts that the fuse box and fuses themselves could not be making good contact overall which can affect electrical stuff not working or not working very well. I spent the morning pulling each lead and fuse off of the fuse boxes, polishing them with Emory cloth and a finger nail file. Reattached and everything worked! Worth a try.
