I have a 91 with a Delco - how many wires are supposed to connect via the square connector? (I only have one wire connected, the other two have been snipped).

It depends on the regulator I believe. A friend just had his Delco rebuilt and they installed a self exciting regulator so no control wires need to be connected to make it charge. The original would only need two wires to normally get connected. The plug is for four wires. There is a large one and three smaller ones. The factory harness has three of the four prongs. It has the large one, and the two smaller ones farthest from the large one. The alternator shop told me that you would only need the large prong and the center small one to make the alternator work if it does not have a self exciting regulator. So I would say the large one, and the small one that is the second space from the large one.
    Confused yet?

Miltonian helped me out via PM. He checked the wiring diagram and his 348 - just one wire attaches via the square plug. Not sure why mine has the two cropped wires next to it. Might be that someone replaced the AC/Delco plug with a GM, rather than Ferrari part, which probably saved about $179. So I can put my alternator back in and get her back on the road!

I'm a bit curious about your description of the wiring attachment on the Delco alternator as "the square plug". I pulled it off last night, it seems to me that it was rectangular or oval. It was on the top of the alternator (as installed on the engine) and was removed from the alternator body by releasing a clip on the rear face of the plug and pulling upwards. Does that sound the same as yours?

^ Yes, exactly, Jeff. It is rectangular, not square. I was merely trying to distinguish it from the Nippondenso "round" plug (which is probably oval ;-) ). By the way, got it all put back together, turned the battery back on, and nothing. It was fine after I charged the battery over night (brand new battery). Started it up, let it think for 15 min, drove perfect, and most importantly, battery light remained off. But how could the battery discharge with the switch off?
