for the few guys with the 'knowledge' I have now stripped everything down while redoing my clutch. The flywheel is in bits and ready for re-assembly. Questions:- 2 springs are shorter than the other 2 - is this correct and if so should they be placed opposite each other. do the 'shims' for want of a better word fit in any specific direction. i have lost 2 o-rings - are these standard when re-packing, did you rebuild then pack, or put some in the base, build, and finish packing with grease, Thanks for all your help, it was a mess when stripped apart. Triple shaft seals will also be replaced as well as a new, dual plate clutch kit - expensive !!! To any other 348 owners this is an area that should be checked regularly as I am sure there are many flywheels were the grease is more akin to oil. john
Hi, John: "Bravo" to you for tackling this job yourself! Since I'm home today, I'll see if I can answer your questions. Others jump in! 1) I don't recall that the springs in my flywheel were different, but it would seem to be good policy to install matching springs on opposite sides. 2) If I recall, the "shims" do go in a specific direction so that they can move after the halves are reassembled. There should be good pictures in Vincent's thread from the old archives. 3) I replaced my O-rings with items purchased "off the shelf" from a hardware store, so you should be able to find a close match. 4) When repacking with grease, I assembled one complete half, then measured out the correct amount of grease and applied it with a popsicle stick. Just spread it around. To me it looked like a pain to inject it through the filler plugs, and you had no way of knowing if it got everywhere you want it to go. Sorry you had to purchase a complete clutch kit, but it should give you years of good service. Hang onto the old parts!
I'm not sure if this will help. But, here is a picture of my flywheel after it had been disassembled, cleaned up, and put back together before the special grease was pumped into the assembly. I did not perform the work; my ferrari mechanic was the lucky guy! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Jeff/Jerry Many thanks. I can see from the picture that two springs are indeed shorter (left/right) and the shims go clockwise, Cheers John
