I am doing a major service. I have a 95 355 with 75K miles. It has the original alternator. Working well and I've never had any problems. While the engine is out, should I have it functionally tested or maybe just go for a re-build. Can they be rebuilt ? If so, who should I take it to ? I live in the Santa Cruz, Calif area.

I do not drive the car socially, so if it fails I will be in the middle of no where miles from a repair shop.

Always debatable to leave a functioning part alone, but you are at the point where it might worth doing. There are threads here on which electrical parts are best to use, from a reliablity point. The more common oem and replacements are known to give troubles for some. Make sure they use quality bearings. Good luck.

If you do the work yourself they can be rebuilt for about $50. Here's all the info you need http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=142329

If it ain't broke don't fix it. Drive your car until the alternator craps out, THEN fix it. Be sure to read the WHOLE thread before you dig in.

If your car has not been updated, I highly recommend an additional ground strap from alternator to chassis. Engine to chassis ground connection can sometime be intermittent .
