Does anyone know what causes the SLOW DOWN light flash? Also, after that started happening,,,when I press the key knob to lock the car...instead on one "cherp" I get four.

I do not have the owners manual with me. So, any help would be appreciated.

It means your driving to damn fast. :D Just messing with you.

Actually if you type that into the search you'll get plenty of reading.

The slow down light can be many things: overheating exhaust (catalytic converter too hot for some reason), faulty slow down ECU, faulty temperature probe, etc. But the flashing is more urgent than if the light was just on steadily (without flashing).

The four chirps while locking the car indicates something is still open, such as the boot or hood.

I had the sdl flashing over this summer when the car is sitting in traffic (engine heat). I took all the CAT ECUs out and thorough inspect the seams and found out that all of them has hairline openings. I sealed them with rubber cement thoroughly and no more flashing sdl eversince. It was cheap fix. Try that first, see if it solve your problems before the dealer to tell you to donate big $$$ to their mech. shop.

when i bought the car, the light was flashing and they replaced one of the cat ecus,.,,,, and the light went out,,

then the light came back on about 3 month later,,, replaced the other cat ecu and the light went out,,, ps,,, you dont need to have the light re-set at garage,, just drive the car for about 10miles and it resets itself,,

suggest letting the car cool down and start it from cold,,, if the light comes on straight away then it will almost cetrainly be the cat ecus,,

if the car start up with no light and then the light comes on when the car is up to temperature - under normal driving - i.e not sitting in traffic,, then either the temp censors or cats are giving a problem,,,,,,, you can check the resistance readings on the sensors cold and hot and see if each side is the same which may give you an idea of which side is broken,, depends on how technical you are...

but if the light does not come on during normal driving but only when sitting in traffic then the cats are simply overheating when the car is not getting enough air flow,,, which can be various things - poor cooling system - cats on road out, sensors over sensitive etc, etc,,

    hope this helps

    regards

ps,, i still get light flashing if sitting in traffic on a warm day,, but soon as you start moving, and get some air moving the light goes out,,,,,,, although i think one of the cats is on the road out,, so that may also explain it,,,

    Ken -

That's pretty neat. Do you recall what type of rubber cement was used? I can't believe it'd withstand the high temperatures of the engine compartment. Basic ol' Elmers stuff??

To be quite honest, the last time I used rubber cement was to make big booger-balls in grammer school.

I used permatex black gasket silicone on the "hairline" crack on the ECU. My slow down light has not come back since :D
