When I removed my old timing belts, the small rods in the tensioners fully extended. They don't seem to retract at all. Is it okay to tension the new belts by just using the eccentric movement of the tensioner bearing and then tighten the nut to lock them in that position? Once the nut is tightened down, does the tensioner spring move to constantly readjust tension? I'm not sure how the tensioner works. Thanks for any help.

I don't mean to be rude or anything..but please stop what you are doing, and purchase a workshop manual for your car. If you already have one..grab yourself a cup of coffee and sit down and read through the entire section devoted to timing the engine and installing the timing belts, before proceding anyfurther.

There is a tool you need to set the belt tention correctly. Those tensioners play an extremly impotant roll in belt tension, and must be set up correctly or engine damage will indeed occur.

    Hello Rich.

I have 1999 maranello 550 and thinking to change the timing belt, I think I should have the same style tensioner. Would you discribe step by step changing the tensioner and adjusting. I would greatly appreciat.

No, 550 has a different tensioner, with mechanical springs only.

355 and 360 are the same though.

It's best to post a page from the shop manual....

Malcolm is a guru for this, But I have it electronically too, so I'll see what I can do, not today though.

With tremendous hesitation, I post the attached document from the 575M service guide. This is NOT from a 550, and I defer to Phil/Brian/Tom to explain any differences between the 550 and 575. (There were, if I recall, some substantial updates to the tensioner system on the 550)

    Hello again,
I liked very much the diagram and explanation in the service guide, what kind of manual it is, I have a workshop manual which is worth of nothing,
What is the name of that manual.
    Thanks.
