-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Looking for help on a CIS problem. I have a 1983 Modial 4v U.S. version. The car had not been driven for a while. I have replaced the fuel distributor with a rebuilt unit, changed the spark plugs, distributor rotors and caps spark plug wires and fuel filter. The problem is that the car starts but after 15-20 seconds the idle goes up to 3000 rpm and stays there until the throttle is snapped. then the idle goes down to about 500 rpm and the car stalls. The car is running rich since the spark plugs are getting black and you could smell the exhaust. here is what I have tried so far. 1. tested for spark at both banks, spark is present. 2. tested TDC sensors and RPM sensors. All okay 3. Disonnected cold start injector and warm up regulator-NO change. 4. Measured system fuel pressure at fuel distributor inlet--95-100 psi!!!!! Which I believe is too high. 5. Measured gas volume at return line with key on engine off -- Volume is 700ml/30 seconds 6. Tried to lean mixture with fuel distributor adjustment screw, still no change. 7. Checked return line and feed line for any obstruction, found none.
Looking at the FSM it looks like your fuel pressure is high with the issue likely in the primary fuel pressure regulator in the CIS unit. In the test procedure looks like cold pressure should be 2.0-2.4 bar (30-35 psi) at 25 C room temp. High pressure is most often obstruction in return to tank. Primary system pressure--any temp--should be 72-81 psi. I suspect it got gunked up from sitting. It is adjusted with shim washers under the spring--but I would think it would have been set right with rebuild. Note that pistons are NOT interchangable but are matched to CIS unit. Fuel pump free flow delivery should be 1000 cm3/sec or roughly 16 gpm. Full load should be 140-155 cm3/sec. If only getting 20-25 ml/ second from return line to free return and pressure too high this regulator is probably the culprit. Also check to see if Aux air device is open when cold.
