I'm really hoping somebody has had this problem and found the solution.

I finally got the 85' 400i on the road and I've got a noise problem.

When driving over bumps like train tracks or multiple potholes I hear a loud “waapida daapida rappa tappa waapa waapa” noise. It sounds like a springy piece of metal tapping behind a body panel under the rear drivers side seat. I've looked and banged every place I can think of and I can't find anything.

    This is making me nuts.

    Any hints?

    1) Check to make sure you have all of the rubber exhaust hanger "donuts" holding your mufflers. There are a bunch of them.

    2) Make sure the load leveler system is working. Start it up and let it run 5 minutes. Measure from the ground to the top of the wheel arch. Shut it off and let it rest 10 minutes. Measure again. Should be well over an inch difference.

    3) Look at all of the rear suspension bushings to make sure they are all there and not frozen in place. Look for signs of rust where the bushings pivot. rust means they're not working.

    4) Read the other replies posted after this one because I'm out of ideas.

Check the exhaust, wiggle it around and see if it hits some thing,

    Mark,

Check your wheels, really! One could be loose.

Check the disc brake calipers, bushings and pads. It could be the pads floating around or a locator clip, if used.

Thanks for your replies but I've checked those things and nothing.

I remember an old TV show episode, maybe the Twilight Zone, where the commander of a WWII U boat was driven insane by a loud unexplainable pounding noise. Later upon dismantling the sub they found the skeleton of a man who was trapped inside the submarines ballast tank during its construction holding a wrench.

Has anybody heard the tale of the missing Ferrari line worker?

    I'll look more this weekend.

That sub guy was Werner Kemper; Col. Klink from Hogan's Heroes. Maybe your guy is Vitto Scotti? Or the ghost of Dino Ferrari?

But more likely it's a loose part. How about jacking the car up 3-4" and dropping it down to see if it goes THUMP somewhere? It's almost impossible to locate sound locations while driving; it always seems to be coming from one place when it's actually coming from somewhere else.

I'm going tie myself up under the car and have my wife drive around the block.

I'll let you what I find.

    I FOUND IT!

Somehow the nuts (53) got loose. I didn't find it before because when I lifted the car the suspension put weight on the nuts making them seem tight. This time I lowered the hub onto a jack stand and there they were flopping in the wind. Tightened them up and the noise is gone.

    Ken. What happened?
Did you see the post with the plastic bloody body just before the post with the parts diagram?

OK. It turned out to be a complete a three piece band.

I'd like to introduce the members:
On drums we have the muffler banging on the sway bar.
On bass we have the shock tops rapping away.
And on lead we have the brake line tapping on the floor board.

Now I know I fixed the noise problem because when I drive I hear a completely new set of noises.
