I've noticed a number of the auto part supply retailers like Advanced Auto Parts have commercials that say they will give you advice on how to do various repairs on your car. Another company says they will put the battery in your car for you.

I've never seen any of that. In fact, unless I was a 60 year old lady I'd be a little embarrassed to have them put the battery in my car in the parking lot.

Is this just advertising fluff kinda like the way hamburgers look in commercials compared to in the local Burger King? Does any one actually get advice from these counter people? Are they trained in some way?

Maybe my experience is not typical but I'm overjoyed and moderately amazed just to get the correct part!

No offense to any counter guys. :)

Ask them to put a battery in a 355 or 360 and watch them scratch their head for an hour:D:D:D

Actually, I have an advanced near me and the guys are VERY HELPFUL. I've been in a pinch a few times and they've really helped me out, loaned me tools and let me look through their parts diagrams. One time the battery died in my Camry, it was pouring rain. I jump started the car and drove it over there to get a new battery. They put it in for me really quickly and like I said it was POURING, so hey, it certainly was conveniant.

I've rec'd great customer service at Advanced too. I'd gone to O'Reilly, Autozone and Pep Boys and none had two of the three replacment filter elements I wanted. Went to Advance and they had all three and great service from the counter guy.

Back to your original question, I think its an attempt to get more women to come to their stores and maybe non-technical guys too. Smart marketing.

Well, as someone who worked the counter for 6.5 years I have a little bit of experince here. I worked at a smaller, mom and pop style parts store that prices were a little but higher, but no one complained becuase we knew what we were talking about. Our owner owned four stores in 3 different towns in this area, so he always has the power to get training for us. Every other month, someone new would come in to our main office and provide us with an hour to a two hour training class on their products and what there differences were. I had a friend who worked at Kragen, CSK, whatever you call it, and his 2 years working there, they never once had a training seminar. So, long and short of it, yes, some are trained, but all the advertsising is fluff.
Our store was known as the only store in San Jose that would install wiper blades on your car, rain or shine.
    That part sucked.
