A friend just had an F40 belt and cam service done, and it occasionally revs to about 3000 RPMs when she comes to a stop. The shop said that it was the carpets getting hung under the throttle, so we took them out, and then then they replaced the double sided tape on the rubber mat inserts on the floor so they would not move.

None of this solved the problem. So my question is basically what could cause this? They took a lot of "stuff" off to change the leaking cam seals (I was told this is common and a bad design from Ferrari to begin with), and they did the belts as well. They also want to change the ride height, as this car is really set up for the track with larger inter coolers, brakes, turbo cooler, etc, but I don't know....I was told by a Ferrari GM who knows the car well that it is the finest F40 he has driven as far as handling, and Dave White also did some work on this car. It is very low of course, and does have the tendency to bottom out if you are not careful on the street.

    Any suggestions on the cause?

Who is "they" who did the car's service? Surely your friend would want to have them be the ones to diagnose the problem if he still has any faith in them. I am a bit stunned that surging revs would simply be put down to ill-fitting carpeting or heel pads and the car would be returned without the issue rectified by any reputable Ferrari dealer! Did they road test the car before returning it?

Also, the likelihood is that this thread will simply result in a game of guess the 1001 reasons that could cause rev surge without solving the specific issue that your friend's car has. However let the guessing games begin. If I can think of a cause Id be happy to help - I will ask my trusted tech.

The throttle cable may be hanging up a bit due to improper amount of freeplay, there should be a slight amount of freeplay at the pedal before the throttles start to move, also there is a fast idle device that needs correct set up and may be activating from a grounded switch or solenoid for the fast idle(forgot the procedure, haven't done one in a while) there is a cable adjustment in the engine vee and it is easy to get to if you remove the inside cover panel in back of the seats hope this helps Eric

Thank you for the reply, yes, it is all a guessing game based on the limited information I have provided or know. They have "oiled" the cables, and checked the throttle valve, just baffled that it would be returned this way or that the problem would appear after the cam and belt service.
