Ok. This board has been great with fixes and I need a good one for this situation! I am working on a Porsche 928 and several hours into a dash removal when I came across a hex nut in a very tight spot. Unfortuately, someone had been here before and stripped the nut! I tried carefully to get the nut to move but no luck. Tried some WD40 and left it there for an hour still no luck and I really cannot torque it enough. Any suggestions on how to work around this? I am so close to removing the damn dash!

Do you mean that the nut's outer drive hex shape is rounded off or that the threads themselves are damaged?

If you have the room, you may be able to slot the head with a dremel and get it out with a flat head screw driver. Otherwise, you may have to drill it out. What a PITA. Been there, so I feel your pain. Good luck!

Before you resort to destructive or other acrobatic methods, try a product called PB Blaster (avail at NAPA, etc)- much better penetrant/break loose agent than WD40. Good Luck.

It's the hex part - the outer shape is round with a hex in the center - if that makes sense. I will try some better penetrating oil and epoxying in the hex socket to see if I can get it to budge.

Sounds like a socket head screw.

I have had good luck getting these out with a tool from
    www.mcmaster.com

Look in their catalog on page 2710 at the "socket screw extraction sets"
    You'll want part #2643A56

Or you can drill the head off which will leave you a stud nub that you can grab with vise grips.

I like 928s been looking at one recently.

It's not a nut, its a bolt, right?
If its a nut, try a splitter. If a bolt and depending how much wiggle room you have, try vice grips secured very tightly and tap the head of the bolt, If room allows. I have tried slotting and filing flats on the side, both methods failed, any success has been with vice grips. If it does not move, spray again and leave it for a while. Try too hard and something else might break.

It sounds like an allen head screw you're talking about right? The outer shape is round? The inside allen head portion is rounded out? Just get a really small pair of vice grips and clamp it around the outside of the screw. You should be able to break it loose that way if I'm right about the fastener.

That's and allen wrench screw. Try channel locks on it. If that doesn't work, drill it out and run new threads. Homedepot sells a die kit for $25 that you can use for all these stubborn screws. It takes fifteen minutes to drill it out and run threads. Eaaaaasy!

It sounds like an allen head bolt, not a nut - correct?
