    Hi,

I'm taking a 82 308 GSTi to a mechanic for a look over and compression test, however, where I live we don't have many Ferrari mechanics. What other things should I specifically be looking for before buying?

The car has over$30K in receipts from work done. The odometer reads 86K and the engine has 2000mi on a rebuild, clutch, brakes have been done. Paint is ? have no idea if its original color (red). Interior is in decent condition. Two small spots of rust (under paint) on rear quarter panel and under door.

They also removed the CAT Conv and the Air Cond. We have waivers up here for emission tests for summer only use.

Also, what price range should a 308 in good condition run? $20K-$25K, $25K-30K, or $30+ ?

    Thnks for all your help!

If your in alaska I dont think pricing is an issue. Its about supply and demand. If you dont have very many Ferrari Mechanics in the area the cost of parts, down time waiting for parts and maintenance is going to sour your ownership. Are you sure you want a Ferrari where you live? What to look for depends on how much the car is on sale for. If its really cheap, then the odd problem can be overlooked, but be aware that when/if you decide to sell the car on, people will be put off by expensive things like missing airconditioning systems and corrosion on the body. Don't underestimate the cost of putting these things right either, a decent corrosion repair can cost a fortune, as can a/c compressors/ parts and catalysts. If the service history is not by a dealer or a marque specialist, then i would also run a mile, unless the car is VERY cheap, and you can live with the fact it will be a pain to sell on later. Have the gearbox checked for good selection of all gears, they are usually a bit stiff to engage when cold, but any grinding/grating noises could test the depth of your pockets at a later date. The cooling nsystem should be checked thoroughly, removing the right hand rear wheel arch liner will give acess to the timing covers, look for coolant stains which might suggest a dodgy water pump. Have the underside checked for corrosion around all the suspension points, as well as all the bushes, joints etc. These all may sound like small things, but add them up and the parts bill alone will make you weep! Aside from this, they are a great car; i'm sure you will enjoy it- good luck!

I would be concerned about the rust under the paint. These cars had no rustproofing till 1984, so there's more than meets the eye when it comes to rust.

Also, you'll want to know who did the engine rebuild. There's a big difference between 86K miles and 2K miles on the engine...

Hard to say without seeing the car, but my gut says 'keep looking' or try to buy this one in the $20K-$25K range with the idea that after a several years it will be a candidate for bodywork or (zips up the nomex...) a decent parts car.

(Alaska is probably where they tested/designed the original 308 a/c anyway - it's the only state where it really works well...;) )

If you're really a girl, a picture would help us analyze your car purchase.......and the less clothes, the easier it would be to spot any rust problems :D

Unless you can get an inspection by a veteran F-car person, you are taking a risk. But like the other guy said, how many cars are y going to be able to choose from up there anyway? So it might be a risk worth taking.

You mentioned $30k RECEIPT, if this is so then find out when was the last timing belt and tensioner bearing was change if it was ever change.
Have the mechanic check all the hoses for fuel, watter and vacuum, just because they don't leak doesn't mean they are good, also if the mechanic says it won't shift to second gear don't worry this is normal untill engine is warmed up. Good luck and Congrats

Dont buy the car because it is there. This is F Car purchase mystake numero Uno. YOu can always have a car shipped for a few grand. Its worth it. I would offer 18,000 and no more on a car with these issues and miles. you will easliy spend 10,000 over the next few years on a less than desirable year and end up selling it for a lot less than you have in it. Spend a bit more for an 83 and newer 308 or 328. JJ

Thank you for all your advice! I put a deposit to hold it until after Mem weekend. I just got back from taking my camper up north for 3 days... King fishing opened up Friday night.

I sure wish I could start with a 328, wiser, safer and sexier. However, this Ferrari is at my doorstep and we don't see many up here. I'll take it to the next level over the next couple of years and have fun with it while doing it!

Hope to talk to you again!
