Need to buy a new camera. In the past i always bought the smallest for portablity sake. Now looking at cameras like the Canon G9 etc... Wife likes the Nikon D40, well only cause thats what the guy showed her first at the camera store. Requirements are best abilty to take pix of our young kids quickly before the shot is gone, and next i would prefer a long lens to take pix at sporting events. My pix at last years Montreal GP were worthless...

So are there some point and shoots that can pull this off without going the SLR route? The D40 i would have to buy a bigger lens and im not sure for the use it will receive if its worth double the cost of some better Point and shoots.

    Thanks,
    Dave

If you have any desire to shoot objects at quite some distance with any type of success, I think you need to look at the slr. With an slr, you don't have the hesitation when you shoot (although this has gotten better with the point and shoots.)

The d40 is a very nice camera. One way to approach it is to look at craigslist in your area. Many d40's show up here in the dc area and you can pick them up relatively inexpensively. Then its the crap shoot of owning a non-warrantied expensive to repair item.

Once you have the slr, you then can pick up the telephoto lens quite inexpensively on craigslist as well. Or you can find a deal on the d40 at a store and look at the used market for the lens.

Best of luck to you. Have fun shooting the kids. (maybe that doesn't sound too good. ) Have fun taking pictures of the kids!
