Bought a spare key off Ebay, had it cut and checked it in my car. It worked, however now my original key no longer works.. It doesn't go in as far, stops before getting to the point of allowing it to turn. Not sure what to do now. I emailed the guy I got the key from and he thinks a tumbler is stuck and said to spray some kind of lube in there. Don't want to do anything that may make matters worse.
On Close inspection of the duplicate key noticed it may be a tad thicker.

BTW Thanks for the alternator info. Rebuilt now and better than new

Go back to the locksmith shop that originally cut the key - let them check it out. If you use a lubricant, do not initially use a spray, use a dry, Teflon-based lube placed on the key and then insert that key into the lock. I'm sure the locksmith can help. Don't screw-up the OEM lock - Big $$$$.

Graphite powder all the way, my key would not turn at all, a little graphite powder fixed it.
    Good luck.

What a moron. I meant graphite-based, not Teflon. DUH!

Hey, I'm getting as bad as Pap, using my own posts as quotes. :)

Check out the black plastic electrical module on the back of the switch held in place by two machine screws. They tend to fail(crumble/melt) with use/age..I have suffered through this syndrome three times. It was not the key tumbler in my case. The plastic electrical module is a standard BMW part for 1970's "2002s". $100USD and some time. Not if it fails, ..but when. I hope this is of some use..(Se previous threads on this).

Not sure why but the key seems to stop just short of the proper depth to turn.
