i am thinking of pulling the trigger, in the next 6 months, on another car purchase. i have held off for a number of years, since i needed the cash for my businesses and investments, but now some of these have paid off and i am not getting any younger....

i already have the 512tr so that takes care of the mid engine icon category. i have, or had, numerous old cars so i dont really want to deal with more aging car issues, nor can i afford the really great classics (yet). so i want something that will be reasonably dependable and can handle a daily commute and the occasional fast run down to milan or to paris. i also have 3 children, but one soon going to boarding school so that leaves 2 under 10 at home - so a 4 seater would be a good idea.

i used to think i would just get a 456mgt or gta, and have done a fair amount of research on those models. but given that the prices for some other cars have recently dropped considerably....i am no longer so sure of my picks. i am thinking that the bentley continental gt, the mercedes cl65, and the scaglietti are decent contenders. the 456mgt prices have also dropped a lot and are now around $100k here for late models, and $80k for earlier ones with a few more miles. the others, (early models) are just now reaching the lows of around $150-170k. so my price range is a bit wide.

no promises i will follow your advice ;) but i would still like to hear thoughts from the forum.

i voted for scag but i dont like any heavy 2 door lux cruiser.

car and driver compared these cars recently and scag won hands down as the best drivers car. ive driven cont gt and much prefer my sons audi s4 to it.

I like the 456. I think its way underrated and in my opinion it looks a lot better than the 612.

You should check the rear seating in these cars. Your kids are going to be smooshed, I think...

How about a CLS, or S, or A8w12, or Maserati 4 door?

I'm a Ferrari fan, but a Mercedes S65 AMG certainly does luxury and fast pretty well. And with the money you saved on the 612 you can get a Corvette.

Give some thought to the Mercedes S600 ($140K). One of my friends just
bought one. More rear seat room (for the kids) and it's a four door, so no
scraped leather trying to climb in the back. And it hauls you know what!

Cover the tr's ears: V12 twin turbocharged engine putting out 510 bhp and
plenty of torque (620). Faster 0-60 than the Scaglietti. I'm an f-car guy,
but you gotta give the big M it's props!

Overwhelmingly the 612... 4 doors like the Bentley but with the Ferrari name and newer and therefore probably a better choice than the 456

What? 612 is 2 door 2+2 so is Bentley Continental GT. But I do agree if a person has the means I think the 612 is the way to go.

I think the 600 mercedes will drop in half in at most 3 years. It is also a good car but not exciting to drive. How about a maser quatroporte? I like them and for 120k, you're in.

Think about the S65 as well. That may have been what you were talking about, though, Dincenzo, with the biturbo V12. It is quite a car. What about a Quattroporte (sp?) or an M5? That V10 is absolutely mind-boggling, and if you're a stick shift guy I believe they now have that option, at least over here in the states, but don't take that to the bank.

I would go with an already depreciated benz 65 for a monster daily or a Flying spur for a bit slower classier car. Or if power isn't a huge issue you can get steals on a couple year old Arnage T's!

I voted for the 612. If you're shopping this part of the spectrum, I think a BMW or Benz doesn't have the rarity of the Ferrari.

If it was my money, though, I'd find a gently used one and let someone else take the initial bath.

The Mercedes CLS 55 AMG is one hellava car. The CLS 600 is just as quick but more luxurious.

thanks for your thoughts. some further explanation from my side: i dont want a four door, but i do want the option of the back seats in a pinch. i did initially consider the vanquish and a 996tt, but discounted the vanquish for being too tight in back and too fragile, and tossed the porsche since i dont want to see myself coming and going evwerywhere....(but i may reconsider this option). i also do not want to be taking a huge depreciation bath. so new cars are out. i do realize that of the choices in the poll, i will likely lose another $20-30k on the 456, another $30-40k on the scag, but the worst will be the bentley and the merc where i can expect at least $50+.

cost is a consideration. so the stretch from a 456 to another car $50-70k more, is not taken lightly.

the other option i guess is to wait for ALL the prices to drop some more...but you gotta live a little too....

    you are a Ferrari guy!

456 is undervalued as a front engine 12. Not loved because of the spare shelve (I don't really call them seats) in the back. You get great workmanship for $80K with a few miles on it. Basically you are buying a $200,000 car for a fraction with may 15K Miles on it.

I diusagree that you will lose that much more. Remember to buy the manual not the automatic. M or no M makes not much of a difference in my book. Save the money up front and drive happy.

Are you back here in Miami? We have to catch up. ..oh and no, I do not have either car for sale or even on prospect. :)
