    So my laptop died last weekend, and I had to buy a computer fast in order to finish up papers for school and whatnot.

    Anyhoo, I didn't have a lot of cash, so I was forced to purchase the cheapest machine out there. I got an E-machine with the Intel Celeron 2.66 (supposed to be a lot better than the standard Celeron), 256 DDR PC400 RAM, and a few other things. It had an integrated video card, so I went to buy an upgrade. With little cash and only a PCI slot (don't ask me why the motherboard doesn't have an AGP slot), I bought a $45 GeForce MX/400 with 64megs of DDR RAM.

    Now, I'm playing Star Wars KOTOR, and the computer can play it. However, it gets choppy and hiccups quite a bit.

    So, my question is, without spending anymore money, is there a way to optomize my system? I benchmarked it with 3dMark 2001 software, and got a score of 2020 (I know - absolutly nothing special.)

    Would this system overclock well? Any ideas?

    Well, 256 MB RAM is a big problem. Get another 256 if you can manage it.

    To overclock the video card's RAM, get this: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=201

    It allows the display of overclocking in the adapter's properties window.

    Don't bother screwing around with overclocking the card's GPU. All you will do is make it run hotter. You should take the card out and take a peek at the numbers on the RAM...the last set will tell you the RAM speed in nanoseconds (ns), which you can then use to determine the MHz to run the ram at. If I recall the best the G4 MX 400 had was 5ns ram which ~ to 200 MHz in the properties tab that coolbits enables. A quick table:

    6.0ns = 166 MHz
    5.5ns = 183 MHz
    5.0ns = 200 MHz
    4.3ns = 233 MHz
    4.0ns = 250 MHz
    3.6ns = 275 MHz
    3.0ns = 333 MHz

    Dunno about overclocking the CPU in that thing.

    I just did some research into overclockin the CPU, and I found some good stuff.

    First off, it's a Celeron D. I found that overclocking the 2.6 Celeron D can get it to operate at a max stable speed of 3.85Ghz. Not too bad - in fact, the people that did the testing benchmarked it againt a whole slew of other chips (up to the 3.2 Ghz Intel P4) and it was near the top of the bunch. Looks like I really oughtta try and overclock the CPU. However, Emachines has locked the overclocking functions of the BIOS. I'll need to see if I can get my hands on a hacked BIOS.

    I'm probably going to just purchase a $100 video card at the start of the year. No point in trying to get this piece of junk to get .05% faster.

    The RAM is PC4000 (I think that's what it is - I'm not at my computer right now). I'll bet that an addition 256 megs will make it run a bit better.

    Thanks for the info.

    With that celly, you're going to be VERY limited, same with the Geforce MX (it's a GeForce2 in disguise)

    If you really want me honest down to earth opinion, you have no other option BUT to spend more money (say 500$? or even less) on a new mobo and cpu.

    Your graphics card isn't THAT shabby, but it really could be better. Let me do a little bit of research, because a Celly should NEVER be used for gaming (much less anything productive)

    Plus, even if you got a Celly to 43295743957 ghz, it still isn't efficent, I can't remember the details why and stuff, but a 2ghz Celly will never touch the same clockspeed of any other chip (the Duron [is it sempron now?] might be the better mate)

    Mobo + Cpu, it'll make a TREMENDOUS difference in your games.

    A decent graphics card to get you through the day.

    Ram is dirt cheap, buy all the quality ram you can get, with proper heat spreaders if you can.
