Want to pick up a few magazine subscriptions, and want your guys help picking some as I would like to get the best in each category: News: -US News and World Report -TIME -Newsweek Cars: -Motortrend -Top Gear -Road and Track -Car and Driver Ladies: -FHM -Stuff -Gear -Maxim -Playboy Also, looking at a subscription to the Economist, but its 98$ for 50 issues. Do you think its worth the cost?
News: Don't read any of them enough to have an opinion. Cars: Top Gear C&D is my least favorite most of the time. Ladies: Maxim The rest are ok, i subscribe to FHM, Stuff, and Maxim. I havent read any in months except for the jokes. They lost their appeal for me. As for the economist, unless you find yourself buying most of the issues, just buy them as you need them. I find their topics very hit or miss. These might make choices easier for you: Cars: http://magsforless.com/pd_automotive.cfm Ladies: http://magsforless.com/pd_mens_magazines_package.cfm For the Entrepeneurs: http://magsforless.com/pd_business_magazines_package.cfm Couldn't help you for the news. Disclaimer: I get nothing from the site i referenced. I was shown the deal. Looks legit enough so I'll try it. Just helping a guy who made a post. Since were on magazines, does anyone get Robb Report? Does have any good articles?
Take a look at it at Barnes & Noble or whatever..... If it isn't worth buying then it's probably not worth subscribing.
Get a supscription to EVO. Its expensive but so worth it. Road and Track is good to. Im not to big of a fan of Car and Driver.
Check out Cargo, I have a subscription and enjoy it. You can find a subscription at some of the discount magazine websites for $10. www.cargomag.com
Id like to hear about Robb Report too, I considered a subscription to that. I think I'll go with Maxim for the ladies department (unless someone can suggest otherwise). Still unsure about the Car/News section. As for the Entrepreneur part I'm getting: Fortune, Forbes, Business Week, and my roomate has a subscription to the Wallstreet Journal. So I've got that part covered I think.
EVO and CAR are my two current favorite car magazines. They've got the best writing, photos and features, in my opinion. Octane is an excellent magazine if you like to read about older stuff. They have very entertaining columns from people like Jay Leno, Rowan Atkinson, etc. I'm pretty fed up with all the car magazines printed in the US. They never fail to print features like "The 2005 Minivan Shootout." Who gives a damn about minivans? It's nice to know that there's a magazine that you can count on next time you're torn over what Kia to buy, but honestly....
I'll have to look into EVO and CAR. Never read either, I thought EVO was a ricer magazine at first (just going by name).
Definately get the Robb Report, I love it and I've learned a lot about things that really don't matter (watch complications, the most desirable scotch distillation processes etc), but its great aspirational reading material.
Evo, you wont be disapointed. Heres the newest issue(dont mind that camera date) Image Unavailable, Please Login
Time is Pinko. Get NewsWeek. Girlie mags: no opinion. Car: If you don't want a British rag like...well.... Car, (they are the best for sure) get Automobile. Ferget the Economist. The type is small and they spell things British. Who needs that crap? Get Foreign Affairs.
Foreign Affairs is rhetoric, with a small portion of BS thrown in for good measure. The Economist is slightly biased (center left), but outstanding for worldwide coverage. All of the US based news rags are trash.
Here's another vote for Evo in the car magazine category. Also, a must-have is Forza. If you're into Internet-related business, Business 2.0 is a GREAT magazine. I subscribe to the Business 2.0 blog RSS and read at least one story a day. I can't say enough about the mgazine (if you're into that sort of thing...).
Decided on EVO for the car magazine after looking into it a bit. Still unsure about the economist. That is alot of money (especially for a college student ha).
Top Gear for your car magazine. Best magazine Ive ever read, and possibly the only one ive read cover to cover. I now no longer by Autocar or Wheels magazines, there no longer up to par. Sadly its only issued once every 2 months (at leaset here in NZ it is)
cant go wrong with evo, the writing really makes you feel like your are in the car driving it. They can take small micro cars and compare them to peformance cars and still make and entertaing read.
That's why I don't subscribe! Evo is so good it *might* warrant a double digit price tag, but its a bit too much for me. I just read it at Barnes and Noble and occasionally buy the issues I really like.
That's $2.00/week. If you were to purchase retail it is probably $5.99 or more per issue, so even if you only read 1:4 you are breaking even. See what the retail cost per issue is, multiply that amount by the number of times per year you buy it and come to a total, compare that to the $98.00 subscription cost. Now if you are driving to the newstand with the strict intention of buying the Economist, you need to add gasoline and your time so a subscription is obviously cheaper.
NEWS: - National Review - Forbes - Wall Street Journal - The Economist Forget Newsweek or Time or other similar rags. They are not news, they are celebrity advertisment rags and worthless left slanted garbage mascarading as news. They do not report real issues news at all because its often over a 2nd grade level which is the average reading comprehension level of their readers. Do you want news or do you want tabloid papparazi crap? Perfect example: earlier this year when the Supreme Court ruled that local municipalities can exercise imminent domain over property to allow a developer to obtain it for commercial purposes as long as it would increase the municipalities tax base..... neither Time, Newsweek, People reported on it at all. One of the most important SP rulings of the past 50 years.... nada in these "news" rags. CARS: - Octane - Motorsport - Classic & Sportscar - Thoroughbred and Classic Car - Vintage Motorsports - Sportscar Market Letter - Forza I get all of these and though my focus is on vintage and classic sportscars they do have plenty of articles on newer machines. Octane has Sir Stirling Moss, Nick Mason, Jay Leno and Rowan Atkinson all doing a monthly column.... great stuff! Most of these magazines offer in depth coverage of all major vintage racing events and ralleys with tons of high quality large photos. Motorsport also has great coverage of F1 and other modern racing and gives great historic comparison to todays events and such. The top 4 on my list are all English and unfortunately expensive. GIRLS: - Is the bikini thread not enough?????? Is your wife ugly???? - Maxim: I do pick this up from time to time, it can be downright hilarious OTHERS: - Lattitudes and Attitudes: Fantastic magazine on the Cruising lifestyle - Cruising World: another great magazine about people living on sailboats - Yachting: just cannot help looking at mega yachts and dreaming.... Terry
