I only cross-post because I know many of ya'll don't leave the EC. http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43785 nlh
Wow Noah...that definitely doesn't sound kosher. Not that I'm an authorized Ferrari mechanic but I do have a history working on various cars and you have a exhaust problem for sure (as opposed to mechanical...I know the statement sounded obvious after I wrote it). The sound that you're hearing may not be coming from the "exhaust" though and may be coming from the connection of exhaust manifold to the headers themselves (bad connection/seals). It could also be a leak somewhere along the way on the "topside" of the pipe or cat. I'm sure that the qualified mechanics have looked into these options, but I think they need to be re-addressed. What else could it be? It sounds like you simply have a leak somewhere...the question then becomes where? This must be driving you nuts and I hope that you can solve this mystery ASAP. Keep us posted...
DAM.... that does not sound correct at all... What year is the 360?, Did they do the update to the cam variators? Sounds very much like a timing issue. let me know... Best regards, Jim
I'd agree with Eric that there's probably a leak along the exhaust route. That leak is enough to keep the back pressure down, hence the muffler isn't getting the pressure/flow of air that it requires to sound as it should. One way to test this theory... get some soap + water (like you'd use to check a tire for leaking), and (on a cold engine!!) apply some to the headers, and along the exhaust. Whereever a bubble forms, there is a leak. Another theory.... bit of a reach here but worth mentioning. How are the catalytic converters? Could the ceramic honeycomb material inside of the cats be crumbling and clogging up the cats?? A chevy S-10 pickup in the wagner pools fleet started driving like ****, and sounded like it was coughing out exhausts. The catalytic converter's honeycomb ceramic material had crumbled and broken, and that was the cause of the ****ty performance. I had the fun of ripping the catalytic converter off and installing a new one. That s-10 had 90k miles and was about 4 years old. Best of luck in solving this!
Jim -- The car is a 2000 Euro model....and I don't believe they updated the cam variators. Other people have suggested timing as a problem, and it's something I'd like to look into. The frustrating part is that the shop that did the work is INSISTING that the timing is now perfect and to factory-spec, and they even suggested that my car is correct while all the other cars I refer to (that sound good) have timing set way off. ("Everybody's lost but me!"). nlh
Take that Puppy to someone who know's what their talking about. Kevin/Rosario at WWOC or Lugui or Chaca at Long Island. Mention my name. If the variators go it's a BIG BILL.
Ask the dealer who did the work if they have a SD2 printout of the engine management system at the time of the repair. You can check the cam angle of the variator and at least may give you a clue before a full check of the cam timing. It is very possible the cam timing is incorrect or you have a failed variator. Cam timing should read as 657 on the sd2 printout. max being about 659 minimum being about 655. If they cannot provide, I suggest send to WWoC for a check. ask for justin or kevin. best regards, Jim
And where was this 30K service done ? Inquiring minds want to know....so we can avoid this facility. TIA Tom
Just an FYI this is the first such mistake that I have heard of from FOCNJ. They are all stand up guys there and I am sure they will fix the timing problem, keep in mind everyone makes mistakes. Its how they fix the mistake that keeps people coming back. I would reccomend FOCNJ any day of the week, they are all courteous and friendly people operating an excellent Facility.
well said, and noah was telling me last night they did a great job on everything else and the car was running better than he bought it, cant really be busting focnj's balls if they are willing to fix it, theyre just finding their legs ive used focnj twice, once to fix a door clip (passenger door wouldnt open) which they fixed under warranty, checked out the CE light codes, about 2 hours of work total, all under warranty, second time, car picked up, battery replaced, disk brake software updated, car dropped back, all under warranty it is very very satisfying to receive a bill of $0 from a F-car dealer, its something you dont see everyday, and i saw it twice
In my opinion the best mechanic can work out of a van. You can put anyone in a fancy dealership and spit you technical BS when they can't fix the damn car. Bottom line, you have to get the job done right the first time. That's why we pay the big bucks for service.
Noah, So you get it fixed yet??? Did you try Auto Sport Design? They may not be cheap, but they'll probably find and fix the problem. They fixed my 355 when no one else could even figure out what the problem was after many visits to dealerships.
