tried the power door locks while they were open, I once read NEVER push that button while the door is open. Now all they want to do is lock. I've cut off power from the battery, locked, unlocked, nothing seems to work. It will only stop cycling through the lock-unlock cycle until the doors are closed and locked. They can only be opened by unlocking with the key and pulled open quickly between the cycles, then they lock again.

Does anyone know how to beak the cycle?

A million of my thanks to anyone who can help me.

    Peter

My car is a QV, so possibly different from yours, which must be a 3.2 as an '87. But here an idea as a starting point (same warning in the OM for the QV, and the locking flaps have huge mechanical resistance preventing you from pressing them to the locked position - if you are sensible):
On my car, the driver's door's grey "door lock" plastic box is in fact only a sensor that records the door lock position as open/closed and the internal flap's position (with door closed) as unlocked/locked. With a closed/unlocked driver's door, I can lock/unlock both (closed) doors via the internal flap.
The pax door has a (black plastic box) motor that locks/unlocks it. Its internal flap does not lock/unlock the driver's door when actuated since the driver's door does not have a motor. (that explains the 100% price difference between the 2 boxes, and the color coding to make LHD/RHD identification easier)
It seems to me that on your car, the linkage of the accidentally pressed locking button may have disconnected, or got bent, so the sensor is sending a permanent wrong signal to the other side and preventing the system from recognizing the door situations.
I would open the long center trim panel and check the linkage for disconnection or bending.
You could also, as a temp. solution, pull the el. plugs on the actuator boxes and just use the key to lock/unlock your car until you find a solution...
    Good luck!

If anyone ever searches for this, I'll put down what worked:

    1. Turn off power to car at battery disconnect switch.
    2. Pull up on the door lock plungers to unlock both doors--the little mushroom shaped thing at the end of the door. Do not open doors.
    3. With key, turn key to unlock both doors, even though they are already unlocked.
    4. Turn power back on.

The best I can come up with is that there may be 2 contacts inside the door locking motor and they somehow got out of sync, one thinking the door locked and the other thinking it unlocked. Urs, thanks for your comments-you are correct that it is a 3.2. Both doors have motorized locks, such that unlocking either door will unlock the other.

Peter thanks for your post which may come in handy on day - I have a 1 1/2 year old boy too, who likes to play with daddy's toy (the QV family car)...

Once while putting the door panel back on, I screwed the door knob on too far. I only know this because when I locked the doors, a few seconds later the driver door started oscillating up & down while the passenger door remained locked. Loosen the knob & all was well. Weird.

Yes, that's the diagram I was looking at. I assume that the switch on the rod (at upper right) can move independently of the one at the center/left, which must be on the back of the lock barrel.

The problem with the knob is interesting as well. Ultimately I don't know why, but it worked.

Yes, do watch out for the monsters...
