Help! Orientation of metal coolant tubes under gas tanks on a Mondial QV...

    OK, I am trying to replace the long coolant lines on my '83 Mondial. I was trying to replace all the hoses, but to say that it's a colossal PITA would be an understatement. So I've decided to just replace the long coolant hoses under the car. The problem is that I can't remember how the metal tubes that run under the gas tanks were oriented. The shifter rod seems to rub on the pipes no matter how I position them.

    Has anyone done this job and have photos? Or could someone point me in the right direction? I tried a few different position but none seemed to fit "just right." Any help would be greatly appreciated so I can get the Mondial back on the road!

    Hi Bob,
    I have just done this job a few months ago. i was worried about that happening, so I used a sharpie to mark the position of those tubes before I removed them. I'll look for some pics, but I honestly don't think I have any that would tell you much because they are buried up in there.

    Also, I would strongly recommend that you not whimp out and only replace the two long hoses. They all are old and any one of them can fail. I was tempted to cheat on mine as well, but you will get a lot of satisfaction out of doing the whole job right and knowing you didn't cut corners. Do you have a lift? I will admit that the job is considerably harder without one.

    Thanks Birdman! That helps quite a lot!

    I want to change all the hoses, but I'm getting a bit frustrated as the silicone hose is a pretty tight fit. I have all day today to do this, so maybe I'll try again. Heck, I've already drained all the coolant! And no, I don't have a lift (jack stands only) so you're right... it's a major PITA!!! :p

    Birdman, I owe you a debt of gratitude (and a beer!)

    The Workshop Manual shows that the passenger side coolant tube (from the engine) should connect to the top coolant hose as it runs along the body. That's what caused me all sorts of grief! Your diagram clearly shows that it connects to the lower hose. Once I did this, there was enough room to connect the other metal tube.

    I'm taking a breather now, but I'm seriously considering doing all the hoses now. BTW, did you replace the smaller heater hose that runs up past the spare tire and into the firewall?

    I am thrilled and somewhat shocked that those pathetic pictures actually helped, but you are welcome!

    I hear you on the silicone hose. That crap is miserable to work with. I only used it for the two long runs front to back. For all the rest of the hoses, I used the Napa stuff that I gave the part number for in my thread. Notice how the hose on the other end of the aluminum tubes between the fuel tanks are black. The silicone stuff is just too hard to get on. Although if you use 1-5/8" instead of 1-1/2" I think it would be a lot easier. (Someone posted that).

    I like the regular rubber stuff for the shorter connections because it is sooooo much easier to install. And franky, the rubber stuff lasted 25 years the first time around. Good enough for Ferrari, good enough for me! I only used silicone on the long runs because it was the only hose I could get in that length.
