Hi Guys, i need help please (car stuck in road outside house)..
My 78 308 GT4 had an electrical issue last week when the regulator on the alternator went. The ignition light stopped coming on and the car ran from just the battery. I stripped the alternator out, replaced the regulator and now the electrics charge brilliantly. I can only assume that the regulator was on its way out for some time as the windows and wipers are quicker and the lights brighter!

So I went for a drive and the car was working perfectly, stopped and started many times. I parked outside my house..

I just went to put the car in the garage and nothing happens when i turn the key. The starter relay clicks and that's it. There is no load being pulled on the battery, with the lights on, the relay clicks, but lights do not dim. The solenoid isn't throwing the starter out and the starter isn't spinning. Its like nothing is connected to the relay!

    Any ideas please?

    Kind regards
    Nick

If the lights are bright, it sounds like the battery is OK but a voltage check would be good. it could simply be a poor/corroded connection to the starter. OR, it could be the battery. If it's old/sulfated internally, the current available for light loads could be fine but starting loads could be beyond its ability.

The battery and earth is great!

    But I am wondering....

Is the loom for the alternator connected to the loom for the starter? I am wondering if when I worked on the alternator I dislodged the wire to the starter solenoid :( Just looking at the manual and the loom seems to be common, starter and alternator.

There is a large wire connected to the starter and it comes from the alternator. You did something bad to it.

It turned out to be the Clifford immobiliser. This alarm has 2 functions to immobilise the car, one shuts the fuel pump down the 2nd cuts power to the starter.
I pulled the wires behind the alarm and relay panel and the starter burst into life. I'm not sure what wire was the culprit but it seems OK now. The wires look like spaghetti behind the fusebox and relay panel, the alarm is behind the secret passenger foot panel, I've tidied up all the wiring and refitted some loom tape. So far so good :)
