Hello all, I'm looking to purchase my first Ferrari. Does anyone have any info on things I should look out for on a 1982 Mondial? The car has 32k miles on it, all records, books, tools and just had a recent major service. It is silver with red interior. Any suggestions on what a fair price would be? The car is currently at Cannillo Motorsports in Deer Park NY. Does anyone know if Cannillo Motorsports is reputable? Has anyone had any experience with them? Also, any suggestions on shops in the area that would give it a thorough check out before I buy it? Thank you for any help or advice in advance. Doug
I've never bought a car from Cannillo, but I hear nothing but great things about them. Sam (SJMST) and Ed (Ed P.), besides from being suave players, both have Mondials. I'm sure they can both answer questions about them.
Hey Doug: I could tell you lots about Mondials. I have an 82 Mondial. One as you describe would be about $18,000. Once you get beyond $20,000, you can get a later model which has more power. The ONLY reason to get an 80-82 Mondial is if the car needs ALMOST nothing (they all need SOMETHING that will need fixing) and the price really fits your budget. Speaking of budget, understand that buying the car is the cheapest part. Budget about 2,000 per year to keep them going, and maybe up to that much or more to fix anything wrong with it after you buy. Any honest seller should have no problem with your requesting to have a PPI (Pre Purchase Inspection) by a knowledgable Ferrari mechanic. Finally, again, I would never pay more than 20,000 for any 80-82 Mondial, Period. Good luck and feel free to ask more questions. Sam PS: Just went to their website. It LOOKS like a great car. I see they are asking 24,950. That is at the extreme high end, IMO. If you can get that down a bit, it could be a good buy. Still get the PPI.
Like Sam stated 25k is a lot of money for a Mondial 8, no matter how nice it is. The stack of reciepts they have since new is impressive, but keep in mind that alternator they rebuilt in 1987 doesnt do much for you now! For this kind of money look for an QV or a 3.2. Starting with the QV there was many improvements made such as better rustproofing, nikisil liners.etc...They also will hold thier value better. Do a search here on the diffrences between the models, the improvements are many. Good luck.
Hey Doug, Welcome to Fchat. I was in your position about 3 years ago looking for the right mondial model for me and trying to gather as much info as possible to make an educated decision before purchasing. There has been an evolution in design of this model over the years that you should educate yourself on before pulling the trigger. There are many great sources of information online, especially this website if you search the archives, (even the old site). Here is a link to one guy's insights from his ownership of the same model that you are looking at: http://www.cs.unc.edu/~keller/cars/Main.html For me there was no question about getting a mondial vs. another model; it was just a question of which mondial. I love the 80s ferraris, and the 2+2 seating in a cabriolet was the right fit for me. I opted for a 1988 3.2 (which was the last year the 3.2 was made before going to the T design) because of the updated design in the body, the larger motor, abs brakes, the fact that a major service "could" be done without removing the motor, and the price was less than a T. The 3.2 s are known for electrical gremlins so I looked for a model that had been serviced regularly and had the "right" amount of miles so I knew it would have been well sorted. My search was a 6 month journey which lead me to the car I have. I did know before I started shopping that the car I was going to buy would be an 88 cabriolet. I wish you the best with your purchase. Ed
That sums it up. QV's run from 1983-85 and 3.2's from 1986-89. The 3.2 is a GREAT car in my opinion, and the one I would like to trade up to. They can be had for not much more than 25,000, so why buy an inferior model for the same price? Again, for 18-20 the car you are looking at is a good buy. Any more, forget it. Oh, and as part of that premium price, does that include a warranty?? They are asking only 22500 on ebay. That's closer. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ferrari-1982-Ferrari-Mondial-8-in-Spectacular-Condition_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6212QQitemZ4580206648QQrdZ1
Just an FYI, there's a Mondial 3.2 coupe on FerrariAds right now for $25K. I don't know the car, but here's the link: http://www.ferrarichat.com/ferrariads/showproduct.php?product=170
Thanks all for the help and advice. I love your humor! I've agreed on what I think is a fair price based on your input. I'm having the car checked out at Berlinetta Motor cars. I've know Doug for some time and trust him. I'll let you know how it turns out.
Uh oh. Looks like we have another one for the breed apart Best of luck on the purchase Doug. Hope it works out well for you. And if it does, I hope to see you out on a run soon...before the winter
Does this mean that you think Sam is "funny"? Seriously, good luck with everything. I look forward to having you join us on a run.
Funny how? Like I'm a clown? I'm here to amuse you? How am I funny? WHAT THE F*@K IS SO FUNNY ABOUT ME?
Thanks again for the advice. I purchased the car after a PPI at Berlinetta. Doug was impressed with the condition of the car. The only problem was the AC. Doug still has it so I haven't gotten it home yet. I see that the running of the Bulls has been postponed to the 23rd. I'm going to try and make it with my son. Hope to see you guys there.
