Got the PPI results on the '90 TS I'm thinking of getting. Everything looks good, but 2 issues surfaced: 1- Check engine light comes on, error code 1211. The tech thinks it is the O2 sensor 2- Compression and leakdown. All cylinders came in great except for 1, which was lower. I think all cylinders had a value of 175 and cylinder 7 had a value of 150. (Not sure what the values mean) This car needs a 30K service and the purchase price reflects it. My question is, would the two issues above be fixed with a $6-7K Major service or could they be potential $$ above that that I need to negotiate with seller? How much would you knock off for the two issues above? Thanks!
Compression numbers would not bother me. Sounds like the values are reasonable reasonable for a 17 year old car. I would not expect the compression to change after a major service, the check engine code may be troublesome, but I'm sure NoDoubt will chime in with the error code meaning. When I forst got my 348 I had some slow down light issues but they went away after an exhaust ECU upgrade. If it is only an O2 sensor, then no big deal at all, they are around $200 for a factory match one, or aruond $60 for a universal fit that you can splice into the existing wiring. BT
I agree, at this point nothing says to stear clear. Get the seller to replace the O2 sensor to clear the fault. As for the cylinders, you need to get a more thorough test by someone who knows how to do it and what it means. The differences between cylinders is the key, not the values necessarily, but a better qualified person can tell you.
How many miles on the car? What else did they note on the PPI? Bear in mind that even simple little trim things can be shockingly, jaw-droppingly expensive to fix, so make extra, extra sure that there are no holes/cracks in your lenses, your climate control system works PERFECTLY, your seat belts function properly, your flywheel isn't leaking, your power door locks and windows are working, etc., etc.
I wouldn't ask the seller to do anything. That check engine light might be worth a further $1K beat-down in the price.
I had a compression test on my car by an authorized dealer and they came up with comp of 110 and leak down of 28% on one cylinder. Kinda wierd in that they would not give me the numbers in writing. Nor could they tell me what was wrong. Local mechanic repeated the test and got totally different #'s. The point is be careful about how and who does a compression test and what it means. You may want to get a leakdown test. That's supposed to be more sensitive to valve problems.
Thanks everyone. Everything else came through with Flying colors. Car has 36K miles. Interior is spotless, front of car has some stone chips, everything works electrically, last documented major by a reputable mechanic in 2002. I am concerned about the CEL since from the info at the348.com, o2 sensor is the most likely culprit but it could also be a MAF. I Can't find any pricing for MAFs at ricambi, what do those run?
Those MAF's have a 'generic' bosch part number I believe. So you can do a web search and get them cheap. But it may just need cleaning!!!
